Can you hear the tones any tips

I am still struggling to actually master the tones.
My hearing while not perfect is adequate was tested in UK in August and no hearing dysfucntion.

I was able to hear if not mimic Chinese tomes and have been learning languages for over three decades am aware of the significance .I have no problem with reading and knowing there is a linguistic differences.

It's hard to distinguish even when slowly stressed in lessons below.

Any advice appreciated.

The fact that finger pointing is a national pastime has obviously flown over your cuckoo's nest Dave. I combobulated years ago that tones are dialectic. The Thai traveller also gave up listening and took up pointing in lieu.

If you can't hear the difference between the tones in the examples given in the video, give up David. There's no hope for you.

You may be right , my wife whiperes sweet nothings then

ma,ma,ma,ma,ma with thai tones and I really even in silent room and eyes shut distinguish, which is odd I can hear Manadarin tones and used to be able to get by when lived there.

Anyway thanks for timely input I shall devote my life to debauchery/ale/working with dishevelled prisoners in our jail

we hear the beginnings and ends of syllables, that where the information lies in western languages.

the thai hears the middle of the syllable, thats where the information i.e. the tones, lies in the thai language.

repeated exposure to the laguage will slowly accustom your hearing to focus on the middle of the syllables.

listen to chat shows on thai radio, even if they are hard or impossible to understand.

David, perhaps you are more of a "visual" man. Look for visual interpretations of the 5 Thai tones and look at them when listening to the tones in the video you posted. That might help you recognise and distinguish the different tones.

Oddly I have tha very image as a screesaver , I'm trying perhaps it's the learning curve, I learnt Portugiese in 3 months of course I had Latin French and Spanish as a base and if you can mimic a nasal west midlands intonation it's easy.

My Mandarin was pretty basic and could hardly read.

In most scenarios, broad and constant exposure and experience is one's best learning tool.

her indoors has tv on in the evening but the banal sitcoms and fawning news of local bigwigs is too depressing, radio hadnt thouth of that here in the hills we have very poor reception is there any staion online you'd recommend with a standard accent, I was actually a DJ here on Green River Radio many years ago but all Lanna and Hilltirbe stuff

i listen to js100, jor sor 100.

its mostly traffic and accident reports. people phone in to report crashes, hold ups and the general mayhem on the streets of bangkok. some phone in discussions at night around current events.

Thanks guys I'll give these ideas a go, made cardinal error of teaching wife English should have tried much harder if she hadn;t been such a good student, we try and speak a bit in the house but with strangers even when I think I have the vocabulary and tone I still sometimes get blank stares
