SURAT THANI – Four young Britons visiting the famous full moon party venue Koh Phangan have been arrested for passing forged pound banknotes and having a small amount of dried marijuana.

The police made the arrest at 1am Friday at a rented house in tambon Ban Tai after an investigation exposed the four men as the people spending the forged currency.

The police seized 96 fake £20 notes, which would be worth around 86,000 baht, and 2.11 grammes of dried marijuana.

Pol Col Somchai Noppasri, commander of Koh Phangan police, said the four men confessed that they had brought the forged currency with them from the UK to spend during the trip to Koh Phangan. They took turns changing £100 at a time into baht at a privately operated currency exchange on the island.

They were charged with owning and passing fake foreign currency and illegally possessing drugs.

The four men were named as: Adam Carter, 21 and three 23-year-olds: Thomas Moore, Luke Swainston-Thomas and Bradley Turner.

And in their puerile arrogance they actually thought they were better off passing the pony money at some hole in the wall outfit on an island that can exchange more sterling in one day than perhaps the whole of, say, Cha-am does in a month?????

They should be imprisoned for their stupidity as much as anything else. Bet they have loads of tattoos and their heads are shaved.

Burnley lads, eh? It looks like one them had a job in Sydney. I doubt the Aussies will want to let a criminal back into their country.

    Oh, wait a minute.

Koh Pangan Provincial Police Commander, Pol Col Somchai Noppasri said the arrest was made after Mrs. Wanpen Sriwisai, a tour operator, notified police that a group of young foreign tourists duped her and other tour operators with fake pounds sterling notes.
The four Britons have been charged with having and using forged foreign banknotes and possession of an illegal substance.
Pol Col Somchai Noppasri said the Foreign Office will also been notified with regards to the counterfeit pound sterling banknotes. Possession and distribution of counterfeit money carries a maximum 10 year sentence in the United Kingdom

Meanwhile in Bangkok Thai police have shut down a factory in Bangkok that was churning out fake bills.
Pol Maj Gen Sommai Kongwisaisuk, deputy commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, led a team of police officers to Bang Khen to raid a counterfeit money factory.
During the raid, the police found printing plates used to produce and churn out bogus Thai baht, US dollars, and Laotian kip. Along with the fake notes, the police also confiscated firearms and a vehicle.
Two suspects have been taken into custody for questioning.
According to Pol Maj Gen Sommai, the bust followed an intelligence report from the US government. At present, the damage has yet to be assessed
