British man canned for peeling fruits

British labour rights activist Andy Hall has been sentenced to three years suspended jail time and a fine after being found guilty of defaming a Thai pineapple wholesaler that supplies the European Union.

Hall’s suspended sentence means he is unlikely to serve any time in jail but the ruling in Bangkok will set a precedent for Thai firms accused of worker’s rights issues being able to go after activists with defamation cases, a criminal charge in Thailand.

Thailand will never get ahead, will never end corruption, will never surpass their ASEAN neighbours while this stupid, protective, parochial, old-boys-club defamation law remains on the books.
All it needs is ONE amendment. Just one: If the offending words are true, there's no case to answer.

Andy is appealing and although locked up now, has been granted bail of only 150,000. I'm not sure why he has to post bail if the sentence is suspended.
    Best of luck Andy.

saying corruption would be tackled has fallen on deaf ears.
if they want to move forward, critics/demonstrators need to be allowed to upset a few
    if demands are reasonable.

He did go to another man's country, sticking his nose in their business. Leave Thailand to Thais. They may never sort out their shit, or it could be a long, gradual process. In either case, he played the do gooder and got busted. And if I may be allowed a tinfoil moment, other shady elements such as European retail chains might have also had a part in this, sensing a threat to supply.

Fuk all to do with him.

if he and people like him dont speak out against the abuse of workers in these industries in third world asia, then the abuses will just continue unabated.

you terry were lucky. you didnt need brave men like andy hall to publicise abuse because you had union representation to look after your interest, make sure you weren't sent into burning buildings with no protection or back up, had well maintained equipment that didnt let you down and retired on a decent pension.

the thais and burmese who work the fruit and seafood processing and fishing fleets are slaves with nobody to champion their cause.

thank heaven for falangs who give a fuck.

once again terry, you show just how dumb you are with your nonsensical posts about thailand.

In majority of cases, though not all, the situation in these countries is a symptom of unchecked retail practices back in the West. We've all heard of Apple's suicide-net-protected factories in China.

You start with those cunts and I promise you'll make a lot more impact than any activist. Starting on the ground floor is backwards and stupid, and at best a game of wack a mole.

I work in retail in Australia. We have factories in China. We regularly have surprise visits to make sure these things don't occur. This has resulted in a few Chinese managers being shown the door, along with other changes. Sad thing is, these ethical practices are rare among big firms. Most are the exact opposite.

And once again Tax you show just how much of an ignorant coont you are by continually putting shit on the Thais and their country yet you lack the spine and the balls to do anything about it.

If you are so concerned about Andy Hall take over where he has left off.

Na, ya won't do that ya gutless coont.

I couldn't agree more. Remove foreign money, foreign companies, foreign tourism, foreign investment, foreign trade, foreign employment, foreign consumption, foreign diplomatic recognition and representation, foreign education, foreign emigration- and just let Thailand be the 'Land of Tai Samilies'. Just ask Burma. Door Knob.
