First Minister unveils world’s largest free stream tidal power project

    12 September 2016
The world’s largest free stream tidal power project was unveiled today (Monday 12 September) at the Nigg Energy Park by First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon.

The MeyGen Project is owned by Atlantis Resources Limited, a global leader in tidal power and backed by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

The first phase comprises four 1.5MW turbines; three built by Andritz and one AR1500 Atlantis turbine, weighing almost 200 tonnes. They have now been fully assembled, standing 15 metres tall and with blades 18 metres in diameter, ready for deployment to the MeyGen site in the Pentland Firth.

HIE is backing the £54 million project with a £3.3m grant. The remainder is made up of funding from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Scottish Government Renewable Energy Investment Fund, Crown Estate and Atlantis. Calum Davidson, HIE’s director of energy and low carbon, said:

“We very much welcome Atlantis and its partners in the MeyGen project at Nigg Energy Park. This innovative, world-first project cements the position of the Highlands and Islands and Scotland as a global leader in marine energy. The project already supports 120 jobs, and with the marine sector employing around 1,700 people across the UK, the potential for growth is very exciting. The MeyGen project is a fantastic example of partnership working at its best. We are very pleased to be part of it, and we very much look forward to watching it progress.”

Great news for Leave voters in the U.K. look , Scotland goes ahead with a mega world record construction project with out EU funding. No funny Euros involved, see we can live without them.

The English tax payers will be subsiding the scheme.
Then Sturgeon can push another referendum on the electorate.
She can't play the oil card any more. ...

Only fair since Scotland subsidizes England. Soon as we get rid of trident we will have another oil boom like the 80's.

Anyway, this project is great news. Good job.

6MW, not much but only the first phase. I wonder how big the finished project will be.

Phoney Tony's family are from Durham in the north of England. As a boy he was sent to Fettes College boarding School in Edinburgh to become a young conservative. The rest is history.

Nobody wants to claim the corpse but ..

Blair was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 6 May 1953, the second son of Leo and Hazel Blair (née Corscadden). Leo Blair, the illegitimate son of two English actors, had been adopted as a baby by Glasgow shipyard worker James Blair and his wife, Mary.

So the genersosity of the Celts , hazel Corscadden, not many of them down the moo ban
