Brothels and Ladyboys to Get Axe as Thai Government Wants Them ‘Gone’

Brothels and Ladyboys to Get Axe as Thai Government Wants Them ‘Gone’

BROTHELS and go-go bars could soon be a thing of the past in Thailand.

The country’s new tourism chief Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul says holidaymakers want to visit the nation because of its spectacular beaches and culture, and not their seedy red light districts and sex hotspots.

But many who base their income on these industries say the new hardline would be a disaster for the economy.

They warn that thousands of sex workers, go-go dancers and ladyboys may lose their jobs.

According to a 2014 UNAIDS report, there are 123,530 sex workers in Thailand and there are no official government figures on how much capital generated through vice economy.

Thailand is world famous for its infamous sex industry, but most of the country is Buddhist and very traditional. Each year thousands visit these pockets of sexually liberated zones where vice and lust run rampant.

“Tourists don’t come to Thailand for such a thing”

    Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul

But the new tourism minister has tried to downplay the importance of the sex industry for the country’s economy.

Kobkarn said: “Tourists don’t come to Thailand for such a thing.

“They come here for our beautiful culture.

“We want Thailand to be about quality tourism.

“We want the sex industry gone.”

Prostitution is illegal in Thailand, but it is almost always ignored because of police corruption

ECONOMY: Sex workers say it would damage the economy and endanger people’s income
And campaigners for sex workers’ welfare say the government is in denial about the importance of prostitution to the economy.

Panomporn Utaisri, from a Christian non-profit group named NightLight, works to help people in the sex trade find alternative work.

Speaking to the Mail Online, Panomporn said: “There’s no denying this industry generates a lot of income.”

Surang Janyam, director of Service Workers in Group (SWING), which provides sex workers with free medical care, says the government plan will mean less tourists.

DENIAL: Campaigners say the government is in denial
She said: “The police presence already drives off a number of clients who come to relax or drink at bars.

“Wiping out this industry is guaranteed to make Thailand lose visitors and income.”

Many of those involved in the sex industry have come from poverty and use the trade to earn a decent living.

The hell we don't go for the girls... I would think the vast majority of males that visit the sex capital of the world, go for ummm sex with whores...

Except for our Jimbo, (of course) He is only interested in Buddhism, playing Thai gongs while meditating in a pot of boiling oil with bird thongchai, whist listening to morlum and discussing algebra equations...

Bar girls use their mobile phones outside a bar along the Walking Street where bars and sex scenes are a commonplace July 31, 2016 in Pattaya, Thailand. Thailand's first female minister of tourism would like the sex trade that is a huge business in the country to be banned. Tourists flock to Thailand for many sights including beautiful beaches but also for sex tourism. Cities like Bangkok and Pattaya are well known as hubs of the Southeast Asian sex trade, despite the fact that prostitution has been illegal in Thailand since 1960.

It seems they are targeting the sex trade for foreigners, not the larger industrial complex for locals.

The key word here is NEW. She missed out love hotels?

Kobkarn said: “Tourists don’t come to Thailand for such a thing.
OK not all do but at lot do. BUT it is mostly confined to three or four places and is not country-wide.

“We want Thailand to be about quality tourism.
Yes like millions of Chinese non of whom's money actually comes into the country.

She would be better off cleaning up the beaches, getting rid of sleazy rip off artists etc..
