can a farang legally buy and own a handgun?

I live in a big isolated house and don't look forward to the inevitable confrontation with a kamoy on the staircase. Lots of stories of westerners being attacked or even murdered by shit who break into their homes. If they come into mine, I'd like to feel the odds are in my favor.

    Has anyone bought a handgun?

    Can it be done legally?

What would be the consequences of shooting an intruder in your own home in Thailand?

This is the gun I keep in my house. Where did I get it? A policeman gave it to me free of charge. Would I use it? Without doubt if needed.

Perhaps in theory, but extremely unlikely in practice. I have been told, for example, there is NO WAY Bangkok will issue a gun permit to a foreigner (there might be exceptional cases?), but wives can easily get gun permits and buy the gun. Personally, I wouldn't want my wife owning a gun, but maybe that's just me...

You can also, as above, relatively easily (?) get an illegal hand gun, but if you use it (without, say, a wife to claim to police she used it, in self defence, dead person on your property) then you will: 1) be paying very large bribes; 2) likely go to prison. You could, find your local army/police gun range, start developing/practicing your skills and get to know the locals that are likely to know how to help you...

    Thanks BB.

I did think that if the gun's not legal and I use it, I'd need to roll the body off a bridge.

If you have 'Thai Citizenship'/ Permanent Residency then I think you can.

Money is number 1 in Thailand. Irrespective, if your family, or your life, is in danger then you ain't got time to think of the consequences.

Personally, I was looking at one of these (40,000 baht) in the Bkk gun shops (Glocks started at 75,000 baht...):

Then I thought, coming home late, drunk, missus screaming, I tell her to hoob bparrrk, she grabs the Remington and...

Nekron had a load of guns I seem to recall.

    Booners didn't though.

Just get your wife to buy one and don't worry about it.

    Not this one again

Correct answer is "No". I will now stand back and watch the usual shower of ignorant shit when this question is asked.

^ Correct....however, why cock up a good thread about guns like that. So, how about if he said to the police "but I really really want one"?

^^ If you would feel safer having a gun in your home, then never mind Thai law, just go out and buy one on the black market, cause if you ever came in a situation where a gun was the only way to save your/family bacon I'm pretty sure you'd rather face the problems of bribing your way out/or a Thai court - than the undertaker.

Dogs are "man's best friend" for two reasons.
One was that you can always talk to your dog but not always your wife/gf.
The other is you won't require a gun since no one in LOS wants to mess with dogs...(unless you got a shyteload of gold lying around your hacienda...which of course you don't.)

Yup. My missus is a good lass, but does tend to the emotional on rare occassion. I would be more likely to be shot by her than an intruder.

Of course, she would be really, really sorry afterwards. 5555.
