2002

I had just spent two weeks farking about in the Tamanagera Jungle in Malaysia. Sounds more exotic than it was. I basically wandered around the jungle and spent a few days with a non-touristy abogirignal type people called the Orang Asli.

After leaving the jungle I headed towards Cherating a beach resort/town in Malaysia. I had met an irish lad called Finley Finlenson who had tagged along with me on my journey. When we got to Cherating we met a couple of English lads who seemed ok and shared the bungalow next to us.

A few days into Cherating (after being chased of the club med beach a few time) I went out on a rather large pissup with the boys. I drank a bottle of rum to myself plus whatever else had come my way that night and went to bed rather spangled.

The next day I couldn't move my head. I hd piercing pains through my eyeballs and I thought that I had the most wicked of wicked hangovers ever. After three days of this I realised that maybe it was slightly more than a wicked hangover. It was so bad that i couldn't bend over to pack my bags. Thankfully the ever nice Fin helped me out (never figured out if he was a bender or not)

From Cherating I we (Fin, myslef and the English lads) headed out to the Perenthian Islands for a couple of weeks of snorkling and drinking. On arrivin g at the Perenthians Fin and myself found beach huts next to each other and the English lads found some a few metres down the path.

The first day there we went out snork;ling with a rather decent guide who gave us our money's worth (sharks, turtles, swordfish can't remember what else) that night though I had wicked sun stroke and still had contintuing bad pains in my head.

The next day the four of us headed out around the headland to snorkel and see some fishies. Part way around the headland I realised that I wasn't going to make it and needed to get to shore, I wasn't strong enough to fight the currents and ended up (thankfully) explaining my predicament to the boys who acted as my own personal tug boats (fuck off with the comments) and guided me to shore. Where they found that I couldn't pull myself up on to the rocks where they had taken me. It ended up with five lads pulling me up onto my stomach to get me out of the water (needless to say I was rather cut up)

now came the fun part of getting me back to the hut. I have to say for complete strangers they were a decent bunch and I am sure I owe them my life.

They supporeted me back to my hut where I fell into bed.

the next week or so is a bit of a blur. I know that during the first night I stopped sweating which gave them a bit of a fright and they decided to take shifts checking up on me.

Two or three nights into it I was at a point whre I couldn't physcially get to the toilet to pee. I had to piss in a bottle which these complete strangers a week before emptied for me.

During the week I had some of th most vivid dreams I have ever experienced. I didn't know if it was real or not. Now I know I was hallucinating but then I just didn't know. I was too scared to sleep yet every time I woke up ( every three hours) I fought the sleep and went back into a more horrible nightmare.

The lads tried a couple of times to convince me to get an emergency boat back to the mainlandm, but being a twat I decided i should stay where I was (honestly I didn't know what to do)

5 or 6 days into it maybe 9 days I'm not really sure. I got to a point where I ventured outside to go and eat. I managed to walk less than 50m before I had to sit down. I was carried/pushed to my table where i enjoyed three or four mouthfulls of eggs before feelinf too fucked to eat anymore. I can remember being carried back to my hut by the boys who were by now starting to worry about me.

oNE OF the most vivid memories of this time is going into the shower and turning it on. I had a hot shower. It was like millions of tiny needlres being stabbed into my back. Never felt anything like it.

I spent two and a bit weeks on the Perenthian islands getting better before I felt strong enough to go to the mainland. For whatever reason the lads had stayed they did.

I got to Kota Baru of all places and checked into a guest house with Fin. We found a doctor and who happened to have an office below the guesthouse and went to see what was wrong with me.

On entering his office he took one look at me and said "You hav Dengure fever" to which I asked him how he knew that. He told me that I looked like a skeleton. he took a couple of blood samples and wieghed me up - 78kg at 6'4" that is rather low. Considering that 6 months before I had weigher around 95 kg it says even more.

Doc told me to stat at the guest house for about two weeks so he could monitor me and see if I was ok. I spent two weeks in fucking Kota Baru with a really nice old malay owner who got me food everyday for me and him and watched old Malay comedies on a black and white TV.

It was a sad day to leave him when I did. He had taken good care of me and made sure I rested.

I headed up from Kota Baru to Hat Yai intending on getting the train to BKK to catch up with a mate living there and see what all the fuss was about.

What I didn't know at the time was that the bloody Dengue came back in wves. I was in KSR (that is where I was told to stay by my mate so he could find me easily)/ I went out to eat dinner with an Indian bird when just as I got to the end of KSR i was overcome by the bloody dengue again and couldn't walk any further. Had to get a Tuk-tuk back.

Took well over 10 weeks to get back to 90% more likely three months to be back on form/.
