    Farang lawyers in Thailand

Stickman has it in for them

You often hear of Westerners making recommendations to other Westerners about so and so being a good lawyer. You also often here that their rates run around several thousand baht an hour. While I do not have a specific recommendation for you, I am of the opinion that in Thailand, the cost charged by individual lawyers is not necessarily commensurate with his or her ability. You do NOT need to pay such high fees for good lawyers here. I also believe that should you need a lawyer, you are better off with a Thai lawyer. Farang lawyers usually act as a consultant, a point of contact. They gather all of the information and prepare a case or documents or whatever the case may be, and then pass it on to a Thai lawyer to do a lot of the donkey work and if need be, to represent you in court. Cut out the middle man, cut out the farang! Of course there are some good farang lawyers out there - but expect the Western lawyers to charge Western prices.

I suppose he says the same about schools and teachers, wonder if he would agree with that if he had kids?

Also I think most of the farang lawyers are not allowed to practise Thai law and that their speciality is international or a specifics countrys laws, yeah you wouldn't need a farang lawyer to draw you up a thai lease agreement, but as in Sir Burrs case with his will a Thai lawyer aint gonna be much cop to him.

Just under his bit about lawyers being to expensive he has this bit saying that TEFLers aint paid enough, wouldn't that make these people that have done a couple of weeks course too expensive for their qualifications, or lack of?

Language schools are screaming out for teachers and there are currently a number of schools which simply cannot get enough teachers into the classroom to meet demand. I just wish some of these schools would actually realise that we're not in 2007, and not 1997. The wages and salaries offered by some of these schools are laughable. I still hear stories of schools offering 26,000 baht a month for a 6 day week or 300 baht an hour for part-time teachers, numbers which quite frankly are a joke in a city which has become much more expensive in recent years.

My divorce in London years ago was cheap and done by a bunch of Nigerians in a crappy ex-insurance brokers office above a DIY shop.

Did a swift, good job they did. Glad I didn't call the lawyer Stickman is talking about.

There are two ways I could answer this:

    1. Why bother going to a hospital like BNH and paying all those high fees when the doctors at the local government hospital are just as qualified and much cheaper. Indeed, you don't need to see foreign educated doctors in LoS - Thai will do; OR

    2. why bother paying for a lawyer at ALL in LoS - there are thousands of webpages all giving out free Thai law advice. Just read up on one or two of them and bingo, you don't have a need to see a lawyer at all, just do it all yourself

I fear William will be getting a visit from the Brotherhood of Lawyers for leaking such a fundamental trade secret.

No one is more practised at dressing up simple concepts with so much ancillary nonsense as to make it unfathomable than lawyers. Well, except for maybe marketers. And Dubbya's speech writer.

Thats the best way, if people stopped doing that then we wouldn't get to enjoy the tales of woe of different farangs losing everything they own or thought they owned
