What to do about fleas?

Got pestered into saying yes to a cat a few months ago.
When it arrived it had a few fleas my wife picked off but lately they seem to be growing back.
I know their lifecycle, (egg, larvae, pupae, flea) isn't too long so I don't know where she could have got them from because she's an inside cat but she seems to have a few now.
Anyone know of a good way to kill them without the chemical sprays?
I bought a flea killing spray from the petshop but I'm kind of loath to use it in case she makes herself sick licking herself.

Yeah those collars do the trick. As a bonus it's quite amusing the see the furballs antics when it's first put on also.

Or a once a month spot on such as Frontline. It goes between their shoulder blades where they can't lick. Keep the cat off the kids beds the first day you apply it.

I've tried all kinds of natural solutions to fleas, including a flea comb everyday on my dogs. No success.

the fleas bread in soil out side.
1 time in Australia we had 2 dog & a lot of flea's, we used flea collars but that did not help.
we had a grass area, the dogs would dig hole, to lay in the sand.
I sprayed the sand holes & the grass with it worked very good, the 2 dog never had flea's again

Anyone ever had to stay in a shower cubicle with two balls of claws and attempt hold and shampoo them?

It's not much fun, but it worked.
Just don't get anfestation of the whole house, they'll infest every bit of fabric you own

The fleas and eggs are killed within hours.

Then give the house and sleeping area a good spray with some strong anti flea spray also wash all bedding.

Vacuum everywhere.

We had an infestation a few years ago and were very naive and ill informed on the subject.We learnt the hard way.

I went with that and a flea collar.
The first day I locked her out on the veranda. What a woeful cat, you'd think she was being tortured the way she carried on yowling and meowling.
She didn't seem to mind the flea collar but she acted very strange the first couple hours it was on, slinking around in a very odd manner.
Anyway, thanks to everyone for the suggestions. She seems a lot happier flealess and not scratching all the time.
