    Any Magicians Here?

I know there are some clever people here. I wonder if they can work this one out?

BBC One - Now You See It, Series 2, Episode 2, Is this the safest but least helpful bike lock in the world? (bit about the bike lock at 00:40)

He previously took away the bike rack and created a spring-loaded gate out of the bar where he's pushing the wheel through. That's why he's holding his hand in the position it is in at about the 1 minute mark....to obscure the camera's view of the metal piece going down and springing back up into place.

On youtube there are videos showing how these illusions are done, including David Copperfied, walking on water, sawing someone in half

Sorry about that, but the truth is usually quite ordinary. That is why I almost always hold to the oath of the brotherhood of magicians. But these TV guys kinda cheat....

I've met a few magicians who are so up there own arses regarding the magic circle code of ethics, ie.never reveal secrets of their tricks that it no longer interests me.

I've seen how its done in that video and some of it ain't rocket science, especially the walking on water '''illusion'' where he's just walking on a sheet of clear, almost invisible hard plastic

Are there idiots who actually believe some of that crap?
I suppose if you want to be fooled then you will be taken in.

It's not about whether you believe in it or not. The point is that the illusion and suspension of belief is entertaining. Though not to you, it seems. Well, that's OK. But to many of us, it's amusing and diverting.

LD, DJ Pat you are both quite right; what magicians perform are as you both state illusions. The guy I used to enjoy watching was James Randy (not sure about the first name) who would soon put the lie to a number of stunts. The magician Valentino actually revealed how a number of things were done and were really quite simple. Perhaps the most notable trickser I remember was Uri Geller - still don't know how he did it.

Can't recall seeing any Thai magicians doing shows
Maybe it's the BGs that make men's life savings and property totally disappear

Pat, do you think actual adults are generally 'disappointed' to find nobody can walk on water and such like?

Do you think they should ask for their money back?

Meet a French dude back in NZ who was a magician.

Watching him do his tricks was awesome: you know it's all rigged/slight of hand etc. but no matter how closely you watch trying to work out how he manages it still does my head in.

    Pretty impressive stuff.

Big resurgence of magicians now. Thanks to the trendy "street magic" of the likes of David Blaine, Kris Angel, etc, there seems to be a lot of good magic acts on telly. I hear they're teaching b asic magic to kids in UK schools now, as a career option.

What I'd really like to see is a resurgence of ventriloquism though. Cutting yourself in half, appearing to hover above the ground is alright for most people, but you can't beat a good ventriloquist, especially when they have a funny mannequin, like Lord Charles. "Gottle o geer".

I saw some Thai magicians in Seacon Square about 4 years ago. They're around.
