Agree with the som-tam comments... although I love Thai food in general, I used to abhor som-tam... only recently changed my mind while living in Bangkok before returning to NZ.

Isaan som-tam is disgusting (the plaa-raa) crab version... not because I'm a snob, or wannabe Bangokonian just much prefer the Bkk/Thai version..

Odd, as I've always found you to lean towards the snobbish area.

I loves the Thai food and could eat pad krapow moo every day no problem (as long as there is a kai dow on top)

    I don't.

Don't mind it but it's too much hassle to fit it into my diet.

the egg must be freshly fried and not one of those cold rubbery ones they fried a hour ago and keep in a metal tray.

street food can be rewarding but you need to keep an eye on things and be specific and assertive in your ordering otherwise you get the cold eggs, chicken skin and gristly pork.

Don't eat meat or fish so no as even the sandwiches have these in as well as everything else. They wack too much sugar AND salt into everything and use that horrible palm oil to fry with, yuk. Even the kannom is shite, don't even eat that.

That's just one example of why I prefer not to eat Isaan food. Snails and catfish, rat and squirrel, raw beef soaked in blood and buffalo placenta are other delicacies I avoid.

I don't consider bbq meat over charcoal or fresh vegetables from the garden to be Isaan specific.

I do like red ant eggs in an omelette though and there is a very nicely flavoured beetle I will eat now and again but can't remember the name of. Dry roasted termites were okay with beer as well but not something I crave for.

I still enjoy Thai food after all these years. Cooked well, it's healthy, flavoursome, and varied. Just don't eat too much of that starched white rice.

Yeah, I get trying to eat healthy - but that can be taken too far IMHO.

Eating is one of life's simple pleasures and to deprive oneself completely of the yummy stuff, leads to depression and TD...

I do like the occasional Ice green tea.

I've been caught out a few times where the lady has made a mistake and pored the green tea into the container of sugar.

I mean, what is it with the Thai and this sugar bolliks. ???

I eat lots of soups, I do have a little giggle when the Handbag will throw a large spoonful into hers. Funny thing is she only does it when we are out and never in her home cooked soups.

I recon they just do it because it's the Thai way and not because it actually adds anything except to poison ones self.

The upside is raw ingredients are cheap here and the Handbag cooks healthy food everyday minus the sugar and other shit.

We consume a lot of fish.

Terminal 21 does a great Som tam Thai by the way, best and freshest I've had by far. Same ladies only doing Som tam Thai always made with the freshest product.

This food is very healthy and rewarding when sourcing someone who does it properly.

The thing with Thai food or any food is that it's all in the hands of the person cooking it and how they prepare it.

Some people could fuk up a shit sandwich given the chance.

I don't think the Dodgers amoungst us who consume The Full English Breakfast can actually say Thai food is unhealthy unless they have their fingers crossed.

Jesus, that artery busting shit would kill a Buffalo.

The street vendor food is fukkin shit Terry, try and find a chicken dish with some breast in there, you won't, the slant eyed wankers give you that shit part of the chicken, the wet greasy part underneath along with that parsons arsehole flap. And why do the cnuts chop the bastard sideways with a cleaver instead of carving? That's to tenderise the skinny bastard thing.

As for breakfast, no fucker eats a full English everyday Terry. Not even fukkin Nige.

And for sugar being considered a poison nowadays, what a load of bollocks, I grew up on shit loads of the stuff in chocolates and sweets to get the energy a kid needs to run around all day. Who needs fakkin teeth anyway?

I still eat sweets now. Try doing a 2 night bender with no food, then when all your energy is zapped buy a few packs of those Haribo cola bottles from 7/11. It's fukkin jellied cocaine and will give you that second wind to get through the last day of the Mrs monthly before returning home.

No, it's because those cunting food vendors are shyer than your Handbag with the coconut milk, which is more expensive than sugar.

Seems you have a high maintenance one there Tel, get rid

As far as Thai food being oily goes, it is, if one consumes shit cooked in it or that deep fried Crap.

Handbag does brilliant curry's and stir fried veggies using proper healthy oils in small quantities.

Fookin nut cases you throttlers who don't eat Thai food.

Besides that lot, have a nice day.
    Spot on.

I love a good fry up like the next man and the quality of ingredients in the UK puts most of SE Asia to shame, but to be living in a land blessed with such great food yet constantly retreating to the British/Irish pub for cheap, bland crap - as some do - is shameful.

You can lead a horse to water, eh?

Not really sure why many think the Fresh produce here is good, It used to be, now the Majority of it goes to overseas markets.

Perhaps it is easier in the ban nok than a bigger conurbation, but my end to that sentence would be 'know thy vendor'. Half of them are reliies around here anyway.

That's a tough one, although we introduced it to them (as well as chilli). And it's bollocks. But one thought- ever had a chilli burn tearing your mouth apart (when you were a Thai newb), and some well meaning person with the knowledge tells you to suck on a sugar cube (or a teaspoon of sugar)? Works, dunnit. Maybe Thai chilli tastes and sugar have a certain correlation? But it's still bollocks.

Nonsense- some of the best grilled chicken I know is available in my local ban nok- and no it is not chicken breast, it is the leg quarter. Why on earth would you cook chicken breast that way anyway, culinary Philistine? it just dries out and tastes like cardboard. Must admit, along with the Thai, I find chook breast way overrated.

    Well how's this for size

There is a thai bloke that has a motor bike food cart in Chiang Mai.

If you ask for Pad Krapow moo he asks if you want an egg with it.Then he asks if you want the egg runny, soft or hard..... But wait there is more.He then asks if you want the pork soft or a little crunchy on the outside.

You get a decent portion with good quality pork.

I've yet to have this dish in a restaurant that comes even close.
