White skin is the secret to my success says model in cosmetic advertisement

'White is winning' racist whitening pill advert storms web

Thais have slammed a whitening supplements brand over its new racist advert that comes with the appalling slogan “white is winning”.

A one-minute video released yesterday by Seoul Secret on YouTube features local superstar Cris Horwang speaking about how she owes her success in the entertainment industry to having white skin.

“You know something? To get where I am today, the competition was tough,” Cris said, "If I stopped taking care of myself, everything that I worked for, the whiteness I invested in, would be all gone.”
The video then shows another light-skinned model, in the role of a new "It Girl" who would supposedly replace Cris if she didn’t keep whitening her skin.

"The new girl who replaces me may make me stop shining," Cris says in the advert as her skin turns completely black.

The narrator then joins in with the slogan "White is winning!" before quickly promising that the supplements guarantee white skin within two weeks.

The video, which began to spread on the web last night, has been heavily criticized among Thais, particularly on the popular Pantip forum, for its awful, racist message promoting white skin.

"Sick logic. An attempt to build a white skin obsession. Isn't this just racist?" the user who started the discussion wrote.

Seoul Secret has not responded to the criticism, but the brand switched off the comments section under the video on YouTube this morning, where it had received a lot of angry criticism.

While Thailand has always been known for its obsession with white skin and the crazy methods people undergo to achieve that look, traditionally perceived as a sign of wealth, Thai society has increasingly developed an acceptance for natural tan skin in recent years.

Last year tan-skin beauty Maeya Nonthawan became a media sensation for being the first darker-skinned woman to win the Miss Thailand World pageant. She was constantly bombarded with requests to discuss her skin color on television.

Last month, “TAN Magazine” the first publication in Thailand that specifically celebrates tan skin and beach culture, was launched, challenging the dominance of the whitening craze era.

However, Seoul Secret is not the first whitening product that has built its brand on racism. Unilever Thailand previously held a white skin pageant for university students to give away scholarships.

Beauty drink Verena L-Gluta Berry Plus also came under fire for an ad that was criticized for being racially insensitive to the African community.

I used to sell my own brand of cosmetics in T-land... Skin whitening serums/creams Oh, and Glutathione (pill form) an anti-oxidant that has skin whitening side effects, were my biggest sellers.

Good business.. as they all want to lighten their skin.

Not for me to judge... I prefer dark skin on an Asian lass, but up to them..

Funny here, Kiwi chix wana get a tan, lightening their skin is not on their agenda..

I would sun bath in Thailand, peeps would look at me well weird like...

Dunno if that was cause I was stark naked, or cause I was rubbing my nuts?

    Kidding....

I used to wash my truck shirtless, thinking I'd catch some rays and get a tan.. kill 2 birds with 1 stone like...

    They thought I was mad...

Absolute nonsense lapped up by gullible Thai women.

Everyone knows the only truly effective way to whiter skin is by eating extra ripe Brie or Camembert. Many stronger blue cheeses are also equally effective, St Augur and Rocquefort especially.

Yup, madness... but ungodly huge business *cosmetics... 3rd next to alcohol or tobacco? don't quote me, just going by memory.

I used to make my own vitamin c serum... just mixing Ascorbic acid with distilled water and glycerin..

I'd buy 1 kg of Ascorbic acid (pure vitamin c crystals) for 1,000 baht
it would make about 175 bottles (30 mls) of 20% strength vitamin c
I would sell each vial/pump for 990 baht..

generating over 150,000 baht profit lol...

I don't know if it is racist, but it is certainly an obsession to be more white. I recently wanted to find face cream in Thailand and was overwhelmed when most of them had whitening products in them.

It is sad really.. just like the whole plastic surgery craze that I've seen in South Korea.

TAN magazine is a huge and forward thinking magazine that may change some Asian minds in their 'white' obsession.

'Racist' Thailand skin-whitening advert is withdrawn - BBC News

'Racist' Thailand skin-whitening advert is withdrawn

A Thai cosmetics firm has withdrawn its video advertising a skin-whitening product after it was attacked on social media for being racist.

The advert for 'Snowz' features famous Thai actress Cris Horwang attributing her success to fairer skin.
The company behind the product, Seoul Secret, issued a "heartfelt apology", saying it had not meant to offend.

The incident has reignited the debate about attitudes to skin colour in Thailand.
Comments about the shade of a person's skin have been commonplace in a country with an abundance of skin-whitening products, although many younger Thais now refuse to accept the stereotypes associated with skin colour.

    'Heartfelt apology'

"In my world there is tough competition. If I don't take care of myself, everything I have built, the whiteness I have invested in, could be gone," Cris Horwang warns in the video advert.

At that point her skin turns almost black, and a young, and very white, rival appears by her side. She looks down in dismay at her dark complexion and muses "if I was white, I would win".

The advert stirred up a storm of debate online, with many Twitter users critical of the advert itself as well as the decision to withdraw it.
One person wrote on a Thai-language forum Pantip.com: "I'm perfectly fine being dark-skinned and now you're saying I've lost? Hello? What?"

Suggesting people with dark skin are losers is definitely racist," wrote another.
Seoul Secret quickly withdrew the advert, and offered a swift apology.
"What we intended to convey was that self-improvement in terms of personality, appearance, skills, and professionalism is crucial," the firm said.

The BBC's Jonathan Head in Bangkok says that as an advertising slogan it could not have been blunter - ending as it does with "Eternally white, I'm confident".
The abundance of skin-whitening products available in Thailand, and the efforts many Thai women go to shelter from the sun, highlights the obsession with pale skin, our correspondent says.

Two years ago, when Nonthawan "Maeya" Thongleng won the 2014 Miss Thailand World beauty contest, much comment centred on how dark her skin was compared to typical contestants.

At the time she said she wanted to encourage all other women who felt insecure because of their darker skin.

Darker skin is often associated in Thailand with manual, outdoor labour, and therefore with being "lower class".
Also much of the urban elite are of ethnic Chinese origin, who tend to have lighter skin than the indigenous people of the Thai countryside.

"This is not a problem that is unique to Thailand. It's a problem that exists all over the world," says social critic Lakkana Punwichai.
"The issue also underlines the issue of class in Thailand, where those with darker skin are viewed as the poor from the rural north-east. We look down on them, on Cambodians, and Indians with darker complexions.

"However, attitudes are changing as Thai elites start to look down on women who long to be white, the same way some westerners look down on "blonde bimbos"," she said.

For moderate sun exposure coconut oil has a natural SPF of 4. I would use it as a base and add zinc oxide (non-nano) to increase the SPF to as high as you need.
    Re-apply frequently (especially if swimming).

Physical sunscreens i.e. Zinc oxide/Titanium oxide are superior to chemical sunscreens as they are more stable and effective at blocking UVA/UVB rays.

"Chemical sunscreens work by absorbing (or sometimes scattering) UV rays. Physical (or mineral)iswhen the UV is reflected off the skin, and doesn’t absorb into the skin at all".

The sun is the most damaging thing to our skin. 80% of skin aging is due to sun exposure/environmental pollutants, so you could argue that it is a healthy obsession that Thais/Asians have, being paranoid about sun damage.

She looks damn fine to me.... I used to be asked all the time in toyland... "why Farang like black Thai women?"...

It used to bemuse me... cause skin color never entered into my mind... a hot chick was just that... regardless of their coloring...

That being said... I have recently joined the hordes of dark skin adoring Farang these days... I get it... their brown skin against our pale skin... hmmm chocolate and vanilla...

Dark Thai girls look much sexier IMHO... It's summer in NZ now.. so I'll have to bake my Japanese missus to a nice brown complexion.. yummm
