Thread: 4 1/2 year old just ate a 500mg paracetamol tablet. Problem?

As in the title. My daughter just admitted she ate some medicine form my bedside table. A 500mg paracetamol tablet. Anyone know if this is a problem?

Risk of severe liver damage (ie a peak ALT more than 1000 IU/L)

Based on the dose of paracetamol ingested (mg/kg body weight):
Less than 150 mg/kg - unlikely.
More than 250 mg/kg - likely.
More than 12 g total - potentially fatal.
Paracetamol can cause serious or fatal adverse effects at around 150 mg/kg for many adults. There is considerable interpatient variability which depends on age, health and substances taken with the paracetamol.

The level is higher for young children.

if it was one tablet, then if your daughter weighed only 2 (two) kgms, she would be in danger.

Probably she's ok, 250mg doses are normally prescribed for kids. Keep and eye on her, maybe eat something.

Here's an idea to have peace of mind.

Get a relative/friend to call the NHS helpline and let them pretend what happened to you happened to them and let them report back with the advice they got.

I meant that Cujo could have asked a relative/friend in the U.K to make a 2 minute call to the helpline and then relay the advise given.

Well, at least you got one sensible answer (from tax). Critical thing here was weight, not so very much age.

A 4 1/2 year old girl should be somewhere around 15-20Kgs (high max).

At the lower weight range, the dose is around 33 mgs/Kg, and at the higher 25mgs/Kg (i.e. 10 times lower than the "likely" threshold).

Lesson of the day - lock up your effing meds. There are some that a single tablet could kill a child.
