Tim Peake unveils Stoke City flag in space at Christmas

    By PeteSmith | Posted: December 25, 2015

@astro_timpeake OUT OF THIS WORLD: Astronaut Tim Peake is flying a Stoke flag in space.

Comments (1) ASTRONAUT Tim Peake has given Stoke City fans a Christmas treat by unveiling a club flag in space.
Stoke fan Andy Rushton launched a 'Let's Get Stoke in Space' campaign to persuade Peake to wave the club's colours at the International Space Station, where he arrived earlier in December ready for a six-month mission.
The flag went up separately as part of 7,300lb in cargo launched from the United States while Peake set off a few days later from Kazakhstan.
Now it has been unpacked and positioned on the ISS so it can be seen with a telescope back on Earth.

Peake has taken a photograph of the opposite view, with the Stoke flag sitting proudly in the black beyond, with Earth in the background.

    Gooooaaaaarrnnn STOKE.

^How come the flag is hanging down if there is no gravity.

    Looks like an elaborate hoax

...and it looks more like a handkerchief or a napkin than a flag.

Stoke City FC flag to blast into space on supply capsule

Image copyright Ken Kremer/NASA Image caption The capsule will deliver crew supplies, equipment and scientific experiments to the International Space Station A Stoke City FC flag is due to be blasted into orbit later, in a supply ship destined for the International Space Station.
Lifelong Potters fan Andrew Rushton persuaded British astronaut Tim Peake to pack the emblem.
The Orbital Resupply Services Flight is due to leave Florida at 17:55 local time (22:55 GMT).
Three astronauts, including Peake, are due to leave for the space station on 15 December from Baikonur, Kazakhstan.
Image caption The campaign to "get Stoke in space" ran for about five months The spacecraft is capable of delivering more than 7,700 lb (about 3,500 kg) of crew supplies, equipment and scientific experiments to the station.
More on this and other stories on Stoke and Staffordshire
Because of size and weight restrictions, the Stoke City flag will be a very small facsimile, which Mr Rushton said he was "disappointed" about, but added he was "over the moon" the astronaut had agreed to take a photograph of the pennant in space.
Mr Rushton campaigned via Twitter for five months and BBC Radio Stoke's Breakfast show team helped him get a flag. Mr Rushton received a message from Peake confirming the flag would soon be on its way to the International Space Station.

British astronaut Tim Peake accidentally gets wrong number on Christmas call home from International Space Station

The first British astronaut on the International Space Station encountered a few problems phoning home for Christmas.

While the state of the art technology on the space station should make it fairly straightforward to phone home, former army pilot Tim Peake hit a couple of snags with his "this is Major Tim to ground control" routine.
When trying to phone his wife, Major Peake heard a woman answer so asked: "Hello, is that planet Earth?"

Unfortunately, he had dialled the wrong number and it was not his wife Rebecca.

He then tweeted an apology to the woman he called by mistake to let her know the call was not a prank.

He did not have much luck trying to call his parents either - they were out, so he left a message on the answering machine.

Major Peake, 43, is on a six-month mission for the European Space Agency. He is only the second British citizen to travel to space and the first to work on the ISS.

He was among three-person crew, including Russian cosmonaut Yury Malenchenko and NASA's Tim Kopra, which took off from Kazakhstan in a Soyuz rocket earlier this month.

He has announced he will run the London Marathon from space in April.
