I know loads of swear words. Can't say I use them much, if at all in conversations.

I knew a bloke once who could not say a sentence without swearing - but it was always the same word (or variations there of).

Y'wanna know something- my decade of living in Thailand has made me a lot worse in my cussing and general vulgarity. I'm not proud of it, and I wonder why.

I think part of it is the constraints of having been a 'suit' in 'polite company' are now convincingly eliminated.

I think another part is being surrounded by a People with a totally different linguistic and cultural heritage, to whom sometimes one uses vulgarity as a form of shock therapy. I seem to be moving away from that lately, due to lack of results. Or age.

I think another other part is a meaningless Howl against a country, a system, culture, society, that has done nothing but shoot itself in the foot ever since I have lived here. And it just keeps getting worse.

The last part, sadly, is due to my background. Born in werkin' class brummie. Ended up a naval officer, then an investment guy. All quite attuned to ripe language. Guilty as charged.

All in all, I think the cursing is justified. Yet I know it is below me.

I've noticed during my time here in Thailand that many expats from the lower end of society, particularly artisan types from the Antipodes, use profanity as a form of punctuation. Sometimes, it is quite euphonious and when used fluently adds a certain rhythm but mostly it is no more than a verbal tic employed as a means of gaining time while their enfeebled minds search for the mot juste.

But now new research has shown that people who punctuate their speech with profanities are actually more intelligent then those who avoid naughty words.
Scientists studied people's ability to name as many swear words as they could within 60 seconds.
The same test was given but with animal names and ordinary words.
The researchers found those who could name more profanities were able to name more words overall.


Writing in the Languages Sciences journal, the authors of the study, psychologists Kristin and Timothy Jay, said: "Unfortunately, when it comes to taboo language, it is a common assumption that people who swear frequently are lazy, do not have an adequate vocabulary, lack education, or simply cannot control themselves.
"The overall finding of this set of studies, that taboo fluency is positively correlated with other measures of verbal fluency, undermines the POV [Poverty of Vocabulary] view of swearing. That is, a voluminous taboo lexicon may better be considered an indicator of healthy verbal abilities rather than a cover for their deficiencies.
"Speakers who use taboo words understand their general expressive content as well as nuanced distinctions that must be drawn to use slurs appropriately.”
