    Wierd facial fungus...

    Occasionally I see people with clumps of blueish-greenish-blackish mold or fungus growing on their faces. Sometimes it looks quite well grown, like moss on a tree, but more often its like a shadow inside the person's skin.

    Does anyone know what it is? And ever more importantly, is it catching?

    a couple of weeks ago i was on the bus and there was a poor chap on there looked like the elephant man.

    serious - his face was hanging down almost to waist level.

    makes you so thankful to be almost normal and certainly put my piles in perspective.

    I can't say that i remember seeing the appearance described in the OP, and my following suggestion may well be wide of the mark. But it is common for people with HIV to develop a variety of fungal infections that are often visible on their face and other areas of their skin, as well as other unusual skin diseases. Having said that, i don't recall hearing about a skin condition that exactly matches the OP's description.

    it ain't a fungus;
    it's called Nevus of Ota (Ita)
    Nevus of Ota is a genetic pigmented lesion of the face, generally present at birth or surfacing during adolescence. Most common in Asian populations, this dark gray or bluish "birthmark" can be esthetically and psychologically disfiguring.
    No, you can't catch it.

    I didn't know you could get 'piles' on your face ... is this a side effect of 'zachery's disease' ?

    OK, thanks FF! Now, instead of worrying about catching this facial fungus thing, I can just be thankful that I've got good genes, instead of weird facial fungus genes!

    BTW, I googled Nevus of Ota... BAD IDEA!

    I had a fairly close sighting last week as well. Quite a surprise it was, I didn't think he was *that* short in real life.

    There do seem to be a lot of Thais with that skin disease where they have large bumpy things growing all over them.
