    Professorís Response Silenced Them All

Could probably apply this advice to some member of the TD forum ...

When His Students Were "Offended By God", This Professor's Response Silenced Them All

"Every day it seems more and more Americans find ways to be offended, and the end result has left our nation full of a bunch of whiners.

Back in the day Americans treated teachers, police officers, and other authoritative figures with respect. Now it appears that today’s youth are far more interested in celebrity gossip or taking selfies instead of listening to their elders.

Mike Adams, a college professor in North Carolina, discussed these issues at length, and had a brutal message for his students:

Welcome back to class, students! I am Mike Adams your criminology professor here at UNC-Wilmington. Before we get started with the course I need to address an issue that is causing problems here at UNCW and in higher education all across the country. I am talking about the growing minority of students who believe they have a right to be free from being offended. If we don’t reverse this dangerous trend in our society there will soon be a majority of young people who will need to walk around in plastic bubble suits to protect them in the event that they come into contact with a dissenting viewpoint. That mentality is unworthy of an American. It’s hardly worthy of a Frenchman.

Let’s get something straight right now. You have no right to be unoffended. You have a right to be offended with regularity. It is the price you pay for living in a free society. If you don’t understand that you are confused and dangerously so. In part, I blame your high school teachers for failing to teach you basic civics before you got your diploma. Most of you went to the public high schools, which are a disaster. Don’t tell me that offended you. I went to a public high school.

Of course, your high school might not be the problem. It is entirely possible that the main reason why so many of you are confused about free speech is that piece of paper hanging on the wall right over there. Please turn your attention to that ridiculous document that is framed and hanging by the door. In fact, take a few minutes to read it before you leave class today. It is our campus speech code. It specifically says that there is a requirement that everyone must only engage in discourse that is “respectful.” That assertion is as ludicrous as it is illegal. I plan to have that thing ripped down from every classroom on campus before I retire.

One of my grandfathers served in World War I. My step-grandfather served in World War II. My sixth great grandfather enlisted in the American Revolution when he was only thirteen. These great men did not fight so we could simply relinquish our rights to the enemy within our borders. That enemy is the Marxists who run our public universities. If you are a Marxist and I just offended you, well, that’s tough. I guess they don’t make communists like they used to.

Unbelievably, a student once complained to the Department chairwoman that my mention of God and a Creator was a violation of Separation of Church and State. Let me be as clear as I possibly can: If any of you actually think that my decision to paraphrase the Declaration of Independence in the course syllabus is unconstitutional then you suffer from severe intellectual hernia.

Indeed, it takes hard work to become stupid enough to think the Declaration of Independence is unconstitutional. If you agree with the student who made that complaint then you are probably just an anti-religious zealot. Therefore, I am going to ask you to do exactly three things and do them in the exact order that I specify.

First, get out of my class. You can fill out the drop slip over at James Hall. Just tell them you don’t believe in true diversity and you want to be surrounded by people who agree with your twisted interpretation of the Constitution simply because they are the kind of people who will protect you from having your beliefs challenged or your feelings hurt.

Second, withdraw from the university. If you find that you are actually relieved because you will no longer be in a class where your beliefs might be challenged then you aren’t ready for college. Go get a job building houses so you can work with some illegal aliens who will help you gain a better appreciation of what this country has to offer.

Finally, if this doesn’t work then I would simply ask you to get the hell out of the country. The ever-growing thinned-skinned minority you have joined is simply ruining life in this once-great nation. Please move to some place like Cuba where you can enjoy the company of communists and get excellent health care. Just hop on a leaky boat and start paddling your way towards utopia. You will not be missed.

Wow, talking about putting kids in their place. Guys like this professor are rare, but needed if we want to save America from stumbling down the same path it has been treading".

I got as far as: "That mentality is unworthy of an American. It’s hardly worthy of a Frenchman".

I'm just gonna go ahead and assume the rest is some right-wing-wank rant?

I agreed with the initial premise until he claimed that Marxists are running the Uni's. Bogus.

Yep, he's a real person and he really did this.

Mike Adams Articles - Political Columnist & Commentator

    Mike Adams

"Mike S. Adams was born in Columbus, Mississippi on October 30, 1964. While a student at Clear Lake High School in Houston, TX, his team won the state 5A soccer championship. Adams graduated from C.L.H.S. in 1983 with a 1.8 GPA. He was ranked 734 among a class of 740, largely as a result of flunking English all four years of high school.

After obtaining an Associate's degree in psychology from San Jacinto College, Mike Adams moved on to Mississippi State University where he joined the Sigma Chi Fraternity. While living in the fraternity house, his GPA rose to 3.4, allowing him to finish his B.A., and then to pursue a Master's in Psychology. In 1990, Adams turned down a chance to pursue a PhD in psychology from the University of Georgia, opting instead to remain at Mississippi State to study Sociology/Criminology. This decision was made entirely on the basis of his reluctance to quit his night job as member of a musical duo. Playing music in bars and at fraternity parties and weddings financed his education. He also played for free beer.

Upon getting his doctorate in 1993, Mike Adams, then an atheist and a Democrat, was hired by UNC-Wilmington to teach in the criminal justice program. A few years later, Adams abandoned his atheism and also became a Republican. He also nearly abandoned teaching when he took a one-year leave of absence to study law at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1998.

After returning to teach at UNC-Wilmington, Mike Adams won the Faculty Member of the Year award (issued by the Office of the Dean of Students) for the second time in 2000.

After his involvement in a well publicized free speech controversy in the wake of the 911 terror attacks, Mike Adams became a vocal critic of the diversity movement in academia. He has since made appearances on shows like Hannity and Colmes, the O'Reilly Factor, and Glenn Beck. His column on TownHall.com has earned him countless hate mails - often from radical feminists who hate males.

Mike Adams published his first book, Welcome to the Ivory Tower of Babel, in 2004. His second book, Feminists Say the Darndest Things: A Politically Incorrect Professor Confronts "Womyn" On Campus, was published in 2008. Later that year, Adams joined the faculty of Summit Ministries in Colorado where he spends his summers lecturing against abortion and in favor of First Amendment rights on college campuses.

In addition to lecturing on the First Amendment, Mike Adams is actively involved in legal challenges to campus censorship. Represented by the ADF, he won a landmark First Amendment case before the 4th Circuit in Richmond, VA. Decided in 2011, Adams v UNCW held that professors publishing columns and giving speeches have the full protection of the First Amendment when discussing matters of public concern. Hence, when professors report such activities as part of their annual review, tenure, or promotion materials the university does not have license to discriminate on the basis of the professor's viewpoint.

Dr. Adams' third book, Letters to a Young Progressive, was published in April of 2013. In 2014, Adams v. UNCW finally went to trial to determine whether the university violated the First Amendment in 2006 by denying his promotion to full professor in retaliation for his speeches and columns on TownHall.com. He was represented at trial by David French of the ACLJ and Travis Barham of ADF. On March 20th, the federal jury ruled in Adams favor. On April 8th, the court ordered UNCW to promote Adams and give him seven years back pay. He spent most of the money on guns made by Browning, guitars made by Fender, and amps made by Mesa Boogie".

Come on mate ... don't attack the messenger. Attack the content of the message if you desire. But this guy is real. And it would appear to me he's as well educated as anybody in this forum.

I like his point about diversity. And here in TD diversity of opinion isn't often welcome.

IMHO it's freedom of speech and not harassment of any sort. The way the system works is if students don't like what he has to say then, "Vote with your feet" ... don't take his classes. If students don't take his classes he won't find employment as a professor.

He's a conservative Christian and a member of the National Rifle Association. It wouldn't surprise me if he even watched Fox News.

I bet this speech - if it actually happened and wasn't some after-the-fact wish fulfillment and click-bait he dreamt up - didn't silence them all. I bet some thought and expressed the sentiment 'this dude is a blowhard cock-goblin'.

    Or something like that.

And to me he looks and sounds like a closet homosexual. (I'm sorry if that offends you, Mike Adams)

Seems he's had his troubles at UNCW over the years since he was hired when he was an atheist and became a Christian. He was denied tenure and I think fired at one point but was reinstated and given seven years back pay at some point.

I don't have to like him or agree with his opinions to think that he has a right to free speech no matter how thin skinned some people might be.

I don't care what he is. I was just adding to the information pool about the person who is central to this thread and adding an opinion. Do you want to deny me that?

Disingenuous response dude. IMHO it's common knowledge that mention of someone being a Fox News watching conservative is meant to be an insult of sorts.

I owe you about 6-7 revenge reds but I'll let it slide once again.

You can take it as you like. Mr Adams can also take it as he likes, but it was a genuine opinion.

BTW, do Fox News watching conservatives feel insulted when they watch Fox News? Do conservaties whisper to friends that they watch Fox News?

Any so-called academic who professes a belief in a " supreme being " and worships it on the high altar of anachronistic dogma is an idiot and scarcely worth the bother.

Having said that, the crime of causing offence is indeed stifling free expression and inhibits creativity, and therefore he is to applauded for his efforts to contain this modern day pestilence.

Since when do loud mouthed Americans whisper? To be honest with you mate I don't think most everyday type conservative Americans give a shit at all what liberals think on most any topic.

Seekingasylum ... I am curious as to why this guy went from being an atheist to a Christian. The reverse wouldn't have surprised me.

Not all Americans are loud mouthed, so unless you believe that all conservative Americans are loud-mouthed, the 2 questions remain. Do Fox News watching conservatives feel insulted when they watch Fox News? Do conservatives whisper to friends that they watch Fox News? Because if they don't whisper and don't feel insulted about watching Fox News, wtf are you talking about being an insult? Is it an American thing? Or just a right-wing American thing? Or just rhetoric in order for conservatives to come across as a victim? Or do you own Fox News?
