    TIme spent in Thailand

There's been a few comments floating about regarding the length of time TD members have spent in Thailand, especially compared to TV's long term experts such as Old Croc who came here on holiday a few times and think they know it all.

    So let's see shall we?

Just about 5 years for MD. I've had a nice time here but I think if settled down in an Asian country long term it would have to be one with fairer immigration and property rights for "us".

My first holiday was in 1977. Arrived August 21, 1977. Coming up on 30 years now. Had many holidays in Thailand after that. Finally retired and moved here in April of 2005.

First time to Thailand 1981. Been living permanently in Phuket since 1985 (as permanent as you can get doing offshore work, that is).

hollydays often from 1995 to 1999...

Settled here beginning 2000, that makes over 7 years here now !

Good times, bad times... For sure a nice country to make hollydays or retire eventually, but working here turns to be tough...

Came here to live in 1990, but returned to OZ for a couple of years after 97. Lived in BKK but after some years there I ended up wanting to shoot every Thai male that I ran into so moved to Baan Nawk a year ago, slower pace, clean air and much nicer people mean I will probably stay here till I pop my clogs off.
There canít be good living where there is not good drinking

Went to Phuket for a holiday in 1999 and stayed there for a year then moved to Bangkok for about two years then moved to Khon kean while building a house out in the stick. Now live in Khon kean during the week and out in the village on the weekends. Still working a 35/35 roster out of Thailand

Been visiting since 94, moved to Bangkok in 98. Since 95 watching the grass grow in the middle of nowhere.

Just wondering, is it 2007 this year? That makes it 9 years, not ten, ticked the wrong box.

Came in 65, and a bunch of years and times since, working and spending off time here, getting drunk and layed often, then quit drinking and still came back., been married to a school teach for over 6 years.

And I also think that they could do a little more to accomidate us Expats that spend a lot of time here without leaving and taking care of a Thai wife and family.

So, you'd be the second one who "Visited on holiday", together with Old Croc, who hasn't voted yet.

I originally came to Thailand in order to establish a consulting operation in support of the automotive industry. I soon realised it was a grave mistake, in that this is essentially a Japanese-controlled low-cost fabrication operation, where my services were not overly in demand.

I have been able to peddle my services, funnily-enough, to a local group which wanted to develop home-grown technology. A recent flurry of offshore work has also kept the pot boiling.

I am in the process of looking around Singapore, China & India for solid opportunities. Singapore seems like a decent end-stop. I find Thailand too chaotic for me & the lack of skilled engineering staff is becoming a royal pain. Coupled with my movement of my PhD studies to Tokyo, there is not too much to keep me here for much longer.

Truthfully I must vote on the holiday side, but have been coming to Thailand at least twice a year since 2001. Some of those hols have been in the 5 or 6 week bracket. Get me house next time out there and hope to make the move permanent in about another 2 years.
