    Howard Marks

Drug smuggler-turned-celebrity author Howard Marks, 69, reveals he has inoperable bowel cancer
Diagnosis was in autumn last year but he has now ‘come to terms with it’
Mr Marks, who spent seven years in a US prison, has no regrets
His bestselling memoir Mr Nice was turned into a film starring Rhys Ifans
Now, his aim is to continue his battle for the legalisation of marijuana
Celebrity friends are holding a concert in his honour to raise funds for treatment and to set up a charitable foundation

Sorry to hear this. I've met Howard a couple of times at music festivals and always found him a pleasant and very interesting guy. He is like a stoned old hippy and its hard to imagine he was once one of the worlds biggest marijuana smugglers

He used to hang around Patpong in the old days

He admits himself he wouldn't last 5 minutes nowadays. Not only with the advanced surveillance but with the way all the other smugglers rip each other off.

Read the book, saw the film. He did seem like a nice enough guy.

Sorry to hear about his illness.

I may download the film again.

wasn't it the one speaker packed with hash left behind at an airport by mistake in america that rocked his boat.
still remember the scene in the movie when he had a tooth pulled when he was a guest in usa prison.
    brutal.
all in all he was a lucky guy.

The speaker incident was the beginning of the end. Howard was naïve enough to think that none of his circle would grass each other up but when the DEA turned on the pressure all his cohorts immediately turned on him to get lighter sentences.

Locked Up Abroad featuring his trial and imprisonment on you tube is an interesting watch

Its a bit sick to wish a terrible disease like bowel cancer on anybody but Howard is not someone who deserves it

This is very, very old news. We all knew about this at least six months ago. Two of my cousins know him, I don't but they say he is "good bloke".

Watch the film - Mr Nice. He seems like a good person during his time with dope. He was not a Escobar.

Read the book and met the guy, but the movie was a complete let down and far too short. I'd like to see it made into a series and actually cover the whole book.

True, but perhaps his life was too "normal"? Narcos included corruption and torture and killing. Probably more interesting to the general viewing public!! Than some kind hearted ganja dealer.

I never met him, wish i could have. But a friend of mine did and has nothing bad to say about the man at all.

It's rare to have the book exactly like the movie, nice when it happens.
I read his book and enjoyed it so much that it encouraged me to check out Thailand for the tuk tuk rides.
He did well for a guy from the valley's and has had an interesting life for a 69 year old, how he's got to that age is anyone's guess.

The purest of pure ganja is good for you!! And i suspect he had the best. Hence his longivity.

I get terrible munchies and concoct pasta galore!!

He was never your average bloke. Not many guys from the valleys reach Oxford and gain a degree in Nuclear Physics
