Do you smile and nod at other whities?

Missus asked me today when out and about why I didn't say hello to some fucking random white bloke that went past us. I relied that I didn't know who the fucker was so why should I? Then I recalled when my old dorris visited, going around as was Carrefore, she smiled and said hello to every farang she saw much to the bemusement to the people on the receiving end. That also brought to mind the countless times when whities see you, as a fellow whitie in the land of the soft shit, and whether through some need for solidarity of some such, smile, nod, wave, or even worse, think its appropriate to wander over and have the temerity to actually talk to me. Bastards. I don't feel the need to say hello to every white face I see when in farang land, and neither to every person I see in Thailand regardless of colour (except of course if it is a she, a real she, is hot, and the missus is not looking or around). To be honest, if some random farang drifts up to me in the street when I am minding my own business, I instantly think it is some fucker on the con or about to ask me for money / cigarette, or generally waste my time

Do you still do this annoying Fresh Off the Boat habit?

I ignore everybody. Ex-pats in Thailand are usually low class criminal types with smelly breath so it's better for all to have the "head down" approach. The world is a big place and I have better things to do than to smile at every white face I see.

That is different and I would do the same thing if the other party smiled at me first. I will not, however, go out of my way to find farangs and smile at them.

^I'm never rude, but I never initiate the ritual. Wouldn't in the US, don't here. But then I basically don't like people very much to start with....annoying in general.

Indeed. However, when this happens, the first thought that strikes me is "who the hell is that"? It doesn't occur to me that it is some random tool who says hello to every white face they see.

I am the same. I prefer the company of my dogs and smile at them many times every day. It could be very dangerous to be seen smiling at white people when walking down Sukhumwit.

Occasionally I speak to someone who is very nearby. Last week in the hardware store, when some white man and I were looking for plumbing parts, we spoke to each other. Or perhaps someone standing next to me at a check out counter I will say hello or smile. Would do the same if I were in the West.

As far as acknowledging foreigners on the street, no.

I rarely get hit up with the "Howdy" crap. One of my elementary school teachers said on a report card that "I projected an aura of simmering hostility". Must still be working.

Per avatar, had that going for me for years....................

If some old geezer is looking my way I'll ask him 'how's it going, man'.

Normally, no reply as where I live, I maybe see one other Farang maybe couple times a month max.

When I had the missus in the States she sure didn't acknowledge every black haired-looking Asian...

Sorry but you were a bit scruffy so I thought you were about to ask if I had any spare change.

I say 'Hello' to all non Thai I come across. Unfortunately they hardly ever respond. My missus asks 'why do you bother?'. 'I'm not ignorant' is my reply.
