do you speak to Thai looking people if wandering abroad?

even if they are speaking Thai, my wife would not say hello

when me and my wife went to the uk she was the oppersite she welcomed the chance to speak with others from her country it helped her fit in while we were there this is the point i was making on the other post about ignorant farrangs

Interesting point - I guess as a newly arrived visitor you may find the whole place a bit overwhelming, and would welcome a chance to chat to a fellow countryman (or at least another foreigner) just to get your bearings. When you live here, on the other hand, this becomes "home" and the urge to interact with foreigners at any cost gradually fades. As a result one becomes much more selective in who one associates with, and hence wouldn't dream of stop to chat to complete strangers, or worse, anyone who looks like an Aussie or an English teacher.

from the posts above it would seem that the worst gratuitous offenders would be the tourist in shorts, white socks and sandals (and bumbag)

the rest are merely homesick and want to use you

I don't search people out to talk to them but I do like to help people and when I see someone that looks like they don't know where they are going, I will lend a helping hand. Unlike BH, I'm not a hermit and do like to see a farang as there's not too many of the buggers where I live. I do know a few that live in the area but don't see them much as they are mostly teachers and we don't keep the same type of schedules. Seems a few of you people here think that ALL farangs aren't worth talking to and I would might think the same of you but it never hurts to be friendly and you can always say that you have something else to do, so what the heck is the problem? I give a nod or say hello to MOST people and don't worry about the small stuff. I think some of the posters here are stuckup their own butts and think they are better than others and I say screwem. If you can't at least nod or say hello when I say hello, then you've got your head so far up your own butt, I don't need to know you.

I will say this though, I have been here for over five years and maybe I'm lucky, but I sure as hell hope I don't develope drandy's attitude.

its making up a polite excuse that i have a problem with. especially if i am sitting next to them on a long haul flight.
This often happens to me on long haul flights.
I'm still working on how to tell them politely to fÜck off.
    Any ideas?

In spite of the fact that I am a hermit I always try to make eye contact with every human I encounter, local, farang, whatever. If I'm successful I nod, smile or otherwise acknowledge the other person's existence. Most Thais seem to react favorably to this. My morning run has become a ritual of smiles, nods and other greetings to the dozens of people who have come to know me over the past couple of years.

Farang are a different story. I'd say that at least half that I encounter here in Korat simply do their best to avoid eye contact and seem to go out of their way to maintain the illusion that they are the only white guy in town.

I may be a hermit, but I am not unfriendly.

hey, it was not developed but slowly refined

the best thing about avoiding farangs, like Eliminator, is that when you do talk to them, you find their sense of humour sadly lacking

in reality, I am the friendliest, most gregarious chap you could possibly come across. I help old ladies, pregnant women and stuttering foolish men; I give directions, pick up dropped parcels and generally behave like the boy scout I always wanted to be but was banned from participating. To make cruel generalisations based upon a few off-the-cuff humourous asides is a cruel and unusual form of nastiness

yes, if you like looking for a needle in a haystack

when I make friends, it is not usually a chance meeting in the street, by some farang asking me "do you speak English?"

it is more a meeting at mutual friends places, or in a bar, or even at parties

You never know who you might end up speaking to.
Dr.Andy is sensible, introducing new folks through friends, or, in your case, the Pentecostal minister, makes a lot of sense to avoid disappointment.

Yep, Eliminator is an easy-going guy and has been an upstanding example of decency, forgiveness and reaching out to others in the vast majority of his posts - just like yourself.

Meeting new friends thru old friends is indeed sensible as is making friends with strangers. You need to make friends with your eyes open in either case.

Tell me stroller, what has religion got to do with making friends? What has religion got to do with this thread?

I know the religion well that you were raised in so I can understand your hating and having no faith in religion.
