How often do you walk up to a complete stranger in the supermarket in your own country and start talking to them and asking where they are from and how long they have been there.

You don't. Why do it when you are in Thailand.

A couple of Christmas's back I was standing in line at Big C when I realised that somebody was talking to me. It was a white guy standing in front of me with his Thai friend. He said his Thai friend wanted to know why we hadn't spoken to each other. I pointed out that I hadn't actually noticed he was there, I don't really pay attention to people around me. I then pointed out that even if I had noitced he was there I wasn't likely to speak to him since A. I didn't know him and B. I didn't really care.

He thought it was a fair response and told his friend this. His friend just didn't get it. So I tried one last time with himby explaining that I wouldn't walk up to a person in the street and start talking to them in England so why would I do it here.

I don't do this very often, mostly because I spend very little time in 'my' country, and also because I am shy.

But I recommend it, it's great fun, unless you happen to inadvertently talk to a stuck-up Pom or Kraut.

Interesting, it is exactly what I tried to explain in another thread. Why would I want to meet "farangs" in Thailand ?

Just a cause someone's got a white, black, red or any other non brown/yellow face is no reason torun up and start a conversation. I do find it funny though when fols go to great legnths to avoid eye, or any contact with wnyone non-Thai though. Extremes in any direction could be considered odd I guess. I have a reason to talk to some one or feel inclined to make a comment I do it. I do find reasons to avoid a good deal of the farang I see on the street though, no differnt than home really.

Walk up to someone in Lotus of Big C just because he's white? Gotta agree with Mrs Q. I might nod and someone in the aisle. If an event should come to pass where you might want to talk to the person next to you, OK, doesn't matter if they're local or import.

Why wouldn't you say hello to someone, is it going to kill you or make you feel subortanet to someone else? Hells bells,we live with other people on a daily basis and I like to think that when I talk to another farang that I have something in commen with them at least on some kind of level.

I enjoy meeting NEW people whether it be on the forum or off or if they are farang or not. What the hell is wrong with saying hello or trying to have a conversation with someone? Are you saying that the only people that you want to talk to are the people you KNOW? Sounds really crazy to me. Don't get me wrong here, I don't try to carry on a long coversation with everyone I meet but I'm damn sure not a prude.

Today one the way out we walked past ten russians on the way to work.

The girls are hard faced and never smile or acknowledge anybody. Some of the men do. I said hello to the first ones but then in the distance of the alley realised that there were another 5 pairs coming up spaced at 20m or so intervals. Fuck saying hello to all of them so I just wlaked on.

The African lads always say hello so I say hello back.I don't stop to swap stories though.

Excellent topic. Mere speculating here, but I'll throw in my two cents worth: farangs in Thailand are often males competing in the same pool of available Thai sex partners. Other farangs are seen as nothing more than competition, drawing from this shrinking pool of sexual talent. On some subconscious level, this sexual competition leads to a natural state of mutual unfriendliness. Another explanation is that many male farangs in Thailand are monads, isolated individuals who have never been good at making friends, even back in their homelands.

The supermarkets in the States has been a flow of zombielike beings for many years. I am fun loving, humorous and outgoing here. Nothing better than seeing someone who is having such a boring time laugh a little to break up the tedious monotiny of the main flow. Good energy, but in Thailand it is difficult and most often it is good to be quiet. So many times in public my wife had to remind me that you can not act like me in Thailand. They are quiet and serious most of the time and the behavior of the falagne is in check as we are culturely very different and this can come across as unacceptable in even simple matters.
A white man smiled at me once while shopping at Lotus. We probably should have exchanged rap. This doesn't happen usualy. We are living in a world of scared, selfish and isolate people. Encaged by fears and self deceptions. The only time in the supermarket here when someone will say something is when they by accident touch your arm or something, then they jump away and say "I am so sorry." I wonder why they are sorry or if they realy are sorry or not. The same person could let you starve, rob you or worse, kill you if you scratched their car and on and on.
Material minded, self indulgent, selfseeking. So stay yourself if you have liberty in resonable affection. Live it out not to follow the dead.

I'd have to disagree with that.

I'd say that the reason many westerners are here is because they are generally loners and don't see the need to chat with every white face they see on the street.

Also, it depends upon where you come from. People who come from my little part of the Foggy Isle don't feel obliged to launch into a conversation with everyone they meet. Other westerners seem to be different; doesn't mean I'm going to hang around and chat with them though.

Jesus H Christ! Scared or selfish? Fuckin idiots stop on the sidewalk or in the middle of Lotus to have a chat are the selfish ones. Take their fuckin conversation to a bar, restaurant anywher but in front the fuckin mayonnaise. GO! get the fuck out of my way!

If you make eye contact nod, be on yer way, no reason to be impolite. I rarely have reason to talk to strangers when I do; I do.

People in general are a pain in the fucking ass. Out shopping at Lotus or walking down the street I'm usually shopping or going somewhere. Don't feel the need to socialize with every white faced geek. Get 'em in ones and twos; maybe a small party, can be fun.
Sittin in a bar, party; hell, even a restaurant? Different story.

I see backpackers trying to find their way; was a time I'd offer to help. I either get a shitty look or some starry-eyed "Oh, WOW! you live here?!?" Fuck it who am i to interfere with their "experience?" Situation to avoid.

in my opinion striking up conversations with complete strangers is the exclusive domain of little old ladies.
if you are not a little old lady then dont talk to me and expect a friendly response.

ok hot young ladies are welcome too but that just doesnt seem to happen in my world.

I'm a reasonbley friendly person and will always reply to someone to says hello or asks about something, but I usually regret it.

I was sitting having breakfast at 7:30am in a small shop on Ratchawitti a few days back when the only other customer an elderly "farang" sitting about 10 feet away came out with the standard. "Hey where do you come from". From there it was a short step to a racist rant about Chinese immigrants in the US. Thought for a moment I'd finally met Boon Mee. Anyway check bin and thanks for ruining my breakfast, wanker.

I think that is the problem. 99% of the time, the conversation with some "friendly" farang (sorry CMN, you are one too) is banal to the point of pain, worse than any cocktail party chat

if it is just in passing, then you can escape, but if you are stuck with them for a while, on a train etc, then you could die of boredom
    I have reported your post
