Most Thais owe their existence to farangs

True or false? Without the introduction of modern medical practice and electricity to name but two imports, would the population have grown by 1000% in the past few decades?

This would be a very different country indeed without vehicles, concrete, glass, roads, comms, pop music, etc.

Not even thinking about anti-biotics along with
other forms of modern medicine, the à la mode
procedure across the planet is applicable to all of us,
one way or another. Showing them all of those crazy
films, making them think violence was a natural way of life.

Dear me, what ever have we done?
All the women take their blouses off
And the men all dance on the polka dots
    It's closing time !

You would have to be monumentally stupid to consider such a proposition.

There was tribal violence in this land on a massive scale long before we turned up. It's a pity that their reproduction of farang police services and peaceful democracy misses the mark so widely.

They wouldn't have silly restaurants named "cabbages and condoms".

    Has anyone really eaten there?

Before the Portuguese got here they didn't have chili peppers, ya gotta wonder what the food was like; grilled monkey meat seasoned with fermented catfish heads, yummy!

Yep. The food is very good, but agreed on the stupid name. Owned by some rich, old-money Thai I believe. So they mostly don't care what we think anyway.

I'd say pretty good for tourists, rather than spicey authentic food. Price is fair as well.

It belongs to Khun Meechai, who used to be a Thai politician but now mostly works on schools and development projects.

Someone should explain to the washed up piss gargling alcoholic where the name comes from.

As one of the most unique restaurants in Metropolitan Bangkok, the Cabbages & Condoms (C&C) Restaurant has attracted international attention. Conveniently located near one of Bangkok's main business districts, C&C is very popular among local and foreign clients.

Our restaurant was conceptualized in part to promote better understanding and acceptance of family planning and to generate income to support various development activities of the Population and Community Development Association (PDA)

We also provide catering services to meet all requirements. And remember, our food is guaranteed not to cause pregnancy.

I've eaten in the Pattaya/Jomtien branch. The food was ok, bit sweet for my taste. The restaurant itself is a beautiful walk through a tropical garden down stones steps to a ocean view terrace.

Mechai Viravaidya. One of the few good ones. Very active in family planning, sexual health, AIDS awareness.

Condoms and cabbages is run by one of Mechais non-profit organizations - (Population and community development association) who fund family planning in poor areas, AIDs awareness and condom distribution etc.

The restaurant itself it clunky kitsch with a condom/public health awareness theme -food is tourist/good level. The tourists I have taken there love it, and you are doing a good thing as noted with the usage of funding. Loads of handicrafts etc on sale, profits again going to family planning and aids awareness.

    Good place.

On your way to Isarn, 8 kilometers before Chakkarat on Phetmatukla Road from Korat, whenever you feel like having a break, give yourself a rest at one of the best local eateries, the C&C Restaurant Chakkarat. C&C Chakkarat has been proud to serve visitors exquisite specialties for over ten years, such as gai yang changyeab, som tam Thai, larb moo/gai/nuea, phad mee korat and delicious desserts, such as locally made ice cream and seasonal fresh fruit. Many ingredients come directly from the Mechai Demonstration Farm belonging to the CBIRD Center. There is also a lovely restaurant garden with large screen for entertainment and karaoke in the evenings.

After enjoying a succulent dinner with draft beer, our hospitable staff invites travelers to relax and stay overnight at its C&C Chakkarat Inn in one of 8 rooms, each featuring a private balcony and warm rural-styled interiors.

    Other information and touristic highlights:

They will be subject to rather more stringent finacial scrutiny by the Charities Commission in the UK if they want to play the charity / save the planet card.

Given the Thai ownership, it could become interesting. Or maybe this will be the first genuine case of MTD syndrome in the UK.

Of course I'm not suggesting that Thais have a propensity towards duplicity, cheating, corruption false and accounting any more than any other race. Heaven forbid.

So have I, the view & venue are nice but the wife and I found the food to be average at best- bland to the point of boring. We enjoyed the original off Sukhumvit more, but I still wouldn't rate it anywhere near my favorite Thai, including places that charge a quarter the price. Tourist food.

Thanks y'all for the illuminations. I be always agreeable to a good meal.

The name "cabbages and condoms" always put me off. Ya see a condom is something one homo uses to protect himself whilst assfucking another homo.

They love it. The food to them is great because it's toned down just like they get at home. The look on their faces when the bill shows up with condoms rather than the usual mints is priceless.

Well, it's good to see at least some of the posters here came out in defense of Meechai Viravaidya.

"Lostandfound" I think you're more than a little offbase with your "they will be subject to blah-blah-blah..." Mechai's mom is Scotch and his dad is Thai. Unless I'm missing something I thought that makes Mechai, Scotch by birth! Remember, google is your friend!

That guy is indeed an "old money" thai, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone in the private sector who has done more "good deeds" than he has via his NGO. In fact it's the largest one in the entire country and he's got projects going on all over thailand.

That guy is 73 or so, yet I still see his car go by a couple times a week to his C&C on Soi 12.. He's one of the good ones out there..

Interestingly enough, the ONLY question I've ever been asked sitting Soi side by foreigners as they meander by is "where is Cabbages and Condoms?". It's because a tree blocks the sign at street level and you have to look up quite high to see the GIANT billboard..

Also taxis stop all the time too asking about it because in thai it's not called Cabbages and Condoms (กะลำปลี และ ถุงยาง) it's called C&C (ซีแอนด์ซี).. In fact this Soi (12) has the nickname of Soi C&C...

One last thing, they have a really good poster in the entry way to the Soi 12 branch. It uses stick figures and shows which sexual acts are okay with out a condom and which ones require a condom. It is quite good!
