Where Am I ?

I am in the most horrible place in Thailand. Its traffic problems are worse than Bangkok, it has really crumby bars, shitty weather, and, apart from a well populated and decent outdoor eating complex, has absolutely nothing of value to a respectable human being.

I went there full of expectation and have sworn never to go there again. Now, of course, there could be something wrong with me. So, I would be grateful if others would nominate their own worst place in Thailand just in case I am not a freak in thinking the way I do about this place.

Loei, the city, was pretty dreadful but this place takes the biscuit ! I will name it if others are motivated to post their ideas of the worst place in Thailand.

Traffic sounds like Chiangmai but the bars etc don't.

I'll guess Pattaya.

It is a genuine request to find out which place others think is the worst place in Thailand. I heard many good things about my own worst place and cannot believe it was as bad as it was. If I should find that nobody has agreed with me, I will have to reconsider my own views and accept that I have been unfair in my estimaion.

Ranong was the worst Thai town I have ever set foot in. That was 10 years ago.

Neck a neck and vying for second place are Pattaya, and Phuket, specifically Patong.

Although in its defence, Pattaya did have some decent supermarkets well stocked with the kind of Western treats, the eating of which may well go some way towards easing the pain of having to exist in that awful place.

How anyone can compare Ranong with Pattaya or Phuket is beyond my imagination.
Ranong is a working Thai town, a border frontier town, also a gateway to some of the prettiest and most unspoilt islands in Thailand. There are beautiful mountains, rivers, hot springs, city parks, national parks. It's a popular weekend destination for the Thai out of Bangkok. You see very few western tourists there.
Ranong is also a serious fishing port. There is some excellent seafood, several excellent restaurants.
Sure enough once in a while you get a whiff of the fish processing but that isn't often. I find it far less offensive than the pollution and heavy traffic of Phuket or Pattaya. In comparison Ranong is totally laid back and pristine.
They put in a big Tesco about 5 years ago so now you can get almost anything you want; wine cheeses etc. The only thing really missing is a French bakery for a nice crispy baguette. I'll take less congestion and pollution over a baguette any day.

Nakhon Pathom is pretty much a shithhole too. With the exception of the biggest Chedi which kinda cool.
