Stupid form at the Thai bank

I went in to the Bangkok Bank today to transfer my fixed term account to another account. I was asked to fill out a questionaire asking if I was American and if the monies in my account were liable to American taxation. This is the first time in my 9 years here that I've seen this questionaire.
Stupid thing about it all is that I had to produce my UK passport to change my accounts before I filled out the questionaire. Is this standard thing now when opening /changing accounts now in Thailand?

The US law which required all banks in any country to report US held accounts is kicking in.

While the bank knows you are a Brit, you could be dual Brit/US..........

Amazing how insidious the Septic financial system has become. Sad that now Thailand has to toe the Septic line.

Septics have been forcing companies in foreign countries to enforce their laws for ages.
The key is simple, just make whatever it is a criminal offense applicable to the Board of Directors.
No Board is going to risk not being able to travel to the US or even being pulled off a transit flight.

I believe this influence [from U.S.] is a rather contemporary development.

Remember the day, where Farang could conduct business with the Thai banking system without hassle nor bureaucratic nonsense across the board??

Yeah I was presented with this when i opened an account at scb the other week. there was the form, and on the application form check boxes as well.

Amazing the lengths they go to to get the money from average merkins, and yet the super rich pay fuck all.

Pseudo, the reason they did not force the issue is because you were not American. If you had been they would be liable for not reporting a foreign account held by an American.

We continue to get hassled by the US government, even though we live in another country to try and escape their grasp. They want to make sure we are all paying our taxes on unclaimed income such as drug money or other illegal activity. I am sure no other nationality does this throughout the world and only Americans would do such a thing.

I started a thread since I was unaware of the requirement to report any foreign bank account that explains things further.

The Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA) is a United States federal law that requires United States persons, including individuals who live outside the United States, to report their financial accounts held outside of the United States, and requires foreign financial institutions to report to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) about their U.S. clients. Congress enacted FATCA to make it more difficult for U.S. taxpayers to conceal assets held in offshore accounts and shell corporations, and thus to recoup federal tax revenues. The FATCA is a portion of the 2010 Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act

The civil statute of limitations for failing to file the FBAR yearly, is six years. And if that isn't enough to keep a taxpayer up at night, the statute of limitations for criminal prosecution for failing to file FBARs is five years. The criminal penalties for failure to file an FBAR are up to $250,000 and five years imprisonment and $500,000 and ten years imprisonment if in tandem with violation of any other U.S. law.

They want all your money -as much as they can get. Funnily enough, 300m Americans if pulled together could stop all this stupidity, which is why you are all get fighting each other, divided and conquered.

And for the Americans reading (and posting on) this thread, think about this:

Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (only Republicans voted against the bill.)

It was passed by Congress on June 29, 2012, and President Barack Obama signed it on July 6
Revocation or denial of passport in case of certain unpaid taxes.

Or maybe an easier alternative for some of you tax dodgers: Renunciation of U.S. Nationality

But you might want to pay your taxes first,……..

Persons who wish to renounce U.S. citizenship should be aware of the fact that renunciation of U.S. citizenship may have no effect whatsoever on his or her U.S. tax or military service obligations (contact the Internal Revenue Service or U.S. Selective Service for more information). In addition, the act of renouncing U.S. citizenship does not allow persons to avoid possible prosecution for crimes which they may have committed in the United States, or escape the repayment of financial obligations previously incurred in the United States or incurred as United States citizens abroad.

Anyone who commits a felony in the US in unable to acquire a passport. I have always paid my taxes and any money deposited into my Thai account is post tax money. The lawmakers are worried about the large offshore accounts where undeclared income can be hidden. This is not my case and never has been. You only have to register a foreign account if at any time it had a balance of more than $10,000US.

I am not worried and will report my Thai account once I get back into the country.

I also have a new one year, multiple entry Non-Immigrant O visa on its way from the Thai Consulate in Los Angeles.

Just remember if you would like to travel to any of the places above, your taxes should be paid. Or else,………
