It has always been a law in LOS, just like many others, one that has rarely been enforced.
True.....they have a crackdown every now and then but its soon back to normal. In any event, better to pay the 2000 baht fine rather than risk losing your passport. A lot cheaper.

All these crackdowns are related to the coup as the Junta want to be seen to be doing things. Hopefully will all blow over by next year.

Its related to to the overblown egos of the newly empowered braided and bemedalled buffoons that the army have put into positions of power in the police force and the immigration bureau.

Thailand is slowly turning into a South American police state.

Havent they got enough of their own mental meth-heads running amok to keep them busy, whats all this sudden crackdown on foreigners about.

Much more of this and I'll be wishing Taksin was back.

Roll on next week and my two months in beautiful Yorkshire.

There seems to be an anti farrang vibe on the part of the boys in green. Perhaps they are prepping the country for an important person's son? Also, why crack down on farrangs when most, if not all of Thailand problems are caused by HiSo Thais with a napoleon complex?

So, as was already mentioned, are the police going to know how to read the passports for overstays and infractions? If immigration has a hard time doing this, what good does it do to get the army or BIB involved?

    This should be good.

Not relevant, really, when they only need to see if you have one or not...

So what you are saying is the BIB only want to see that you have one on your person and fine you 2000 baht if you don't. How is this going to help detect overstays which was the reason given for carrying one in the first place?

Bangyai has it, as usual...The army is determined to make Thailand a very happy place...

Somehow, I don't think it will blow over...These guys are cool and calculating...

As long as one plays by the rules, he/she will be fine...

But, I think some of the people here may be more wary of the famous smile and happiness factor which comes from "rule absolute"...

I think one of the keys to happiness is staying out of the areas where the military is concentrating on like Phuket or Pattaya. I will be taking a trip to Chiang Mai and BKK next month, so I will definitely have my passport with me.

I never see too many military or police out where I live except when the local artillery company comes out to shoot off their weapons and do night maneuvers. Scares the shit out of the local dogs.

Thailand of course, not Cambodia, that's more like 1500's Amazon territory.
You jest, Shirley? Anyone intimate with both could tell you the biggest difference between Thailand and Cambodia is the extremely thin veneer of "civilisation" Thailand pretends to have.

Thailand has been lucky, historically speaking, Cambodia, not so much...

A few different historical rolls of the dice and Thailand wouldn't be too dissimilar to what you see in Cambodia today.

And anyway - in case you hadn't noticed - Cambodia has been on an upward trajectory for quite a while now despite all of its multitudinous problems, while Thailand has been gradually destroying itself from within.

Thailand, in many ways, is a far more fucked up society than Cambodia, despite its greater wealth, and more peaceful recent history. Or, perhaps, because of it?

Too bad, som nom naa eh? You can suckle on the correct cocks for external protection - and be allowed to cling to your traditional social heirarchies - only so long before your own venal, corrupt, and ultimately uncivilised nature brings you to your knees.

A throwback of a society in a region where all the traditional heirarchies have long since been abolished and replaced with new, less antiquated, forms of social order.

The last time I renewed my passport I had to send it off. I was allowed to do my 90 day report using a photocopy. But that has now changed as Ohoh pointed out.

    Current British passport:
If you are in a country where you must apply in person, you must bring your current British passport with you when you apply, and also bring a full colour photocopy of the entire passport (every page ncluding blank pages). .

Yeah I know its a madhouse / asylum etc , good fun to visit etc , but you have to wonder where this is all going for the retired foreigners .

Ok some folk don't really give a toss thats fair enough

One thing 5 months in one lump taught me , was the absolute lack of any form of what should be right justice , it just don't seem to apply here ,

I accept it as that's the way things roll in a 3rd world country. The trick is to know what may catch you out and avoid it.

Further more, having a bit of an Idea of how to handle the situation if ever caught out helps as well.

No surprises here for me, seen lots of mad shit go down.

    Quite easy really.

I like it here simply because one never knows what will happen tomorrow.

Always something different on the streets and always something going down.

If it was like home, I'd be living at home.

    Easy as that for me.

No where is perfect EH. Thailand is far from it but one can have a great life here if on top of one's game.

Geographically its the center of the world.

    Perfect for my wander lust.

I lost my passport, taking it out on the piss in Thailand. I expect the Embassies will be busy soon and those fukkers who sell them on.
Stupid rule, if your home country will re-issue you a passport on the strength of a colour photocopy, then why is that not acceptable to the Thai authorities ?
Just another money earner for them, how can they justify 2000 baht when the average wage is only a few hundred a day.

I've just got back from one of BKK's main police stations.

Had to pay a fine and pick up my license.

Fine was supposed to be 500bt - but the kind lady reduced it to 200

I asked her about this and she said

"Yes - you be careful na"

I then explained what a passport costs and that I didn't want to carry it around with me all the time.

"You copy passport and show driving license too go ok"

    Gotta love it
