    Racism, class and social identity

One of the biggest stories this week came from a couple in the US. The owner of the clippers Basketball team and his 'girlfriend' who is half black and half Filipino. Everyone is calling out the owner for racism over this so it's big news. When I listened to this I heard more than racism here. I personally think there are a lot of issues in this and they very much connect to the relationships of foreigners and poor Thai women. It's a clash of classes.

Listen to this and tell me that some of the issues in it aren't similar to the Westerners who marry or try to develop relationships with 'lower' class or uneducated Thai women.

Just remember my take on this isn't about skin as much as it is social and education background. It's about hiding or trying to change the truth to save your perceived social status.

I found it quite sad, the inflexibility of the man and a woman who quite obviously has a mind of her own.

Taking the point about class and education, it takes an idiot to get into a relationship where there are too many differences. If you want a marriage to a woman with the same education, social background etc, fine. Myself I've no problem with a woman with a good body, less education, but the right qualities I admire e.g. loyalty, tenderness, a sense of humour, a good mother.

She obviously set this up - I suspect she was talking in a way that she doesn't usually talk, and this caught him off guard. This is one point.

Regarding what he says, I don't know if this is his viewpoint and what he normally says or not, but it comes across as very strange.

I suspect it's all utterly fuked up; their relationship (based on money and power rather than love; she is an equal party to that and all the baggage it brings...); him; her; America; dominant world cultures...

When people are napalming and cluster bombing and drone striking to their hearts content, I really can't get too het up about these two folks and their manipulated, fuked up, conversation. I'm not directing this to the OP, just trying to give it some general perspective.
How do I post these pictures???

    Yes, hard to deny that.

But, not 'but', just it's also worth noting that this conversation was framed by her for this specific purpose, we don't have the context or the full discourse.

The fact that the crusty old breddah even sullied that fine piece of ass in the first place should be enough for him.

    Indeed, he is...
But he has company in numbers.

The attention it is receiving - as he is a public figure.

A lot of people put him down and maybe they should but is he really any worse than the guys who come to Thailand and screw lots of bargirls and refuse to settle down with any of them because they are 'lower'? Is he really worse than the guy who lies about his bargirl girlfriend's background to protect his image? Is he really worse than the guy who tells his wife how to dress up so that she doesn't come across as a 'lower class' when he introduces her to his friends?

Of course, not every foreigner is like this. I just think a lot of society is doing things which they think aren't racist, prejudice or discriminatory because they just can't see it that way or deep down inside they refuse to acknowledge it.

I can't tell you how many western guys I've known here who happily screwed bargirls but would never consider marrying them. It's basically a normal mindset. Aren't these guys as bad as Mr. Sterling to some extent.

Then there are the folks who are trying to climb the social ladder by trying to get into certain groups or jobs or hanging out in certain places. Thais certainly do it and it's regularly brought up in conversation here on TD when the word hiso is used. Westerners are out there doing the same thing as these 'hiso wannabes'.

I'm not defending Sterling one bit but I do see him as really not that different than most folks out there. His personal ideas of social status and what gives him it are certainly different than that of many others but his actions and argument for preserving the status or image he believes he has achieved really aren't much different than what many folks do or would do to preserve their perceived social status.

I'll be the first to admit I'm one of the foreigners who was living two lives here in Thailand. By day I worked a normal job with hiso Thais and by night I was out whoring around. I never specifically sought educated woman from a better background for a wife. I was open to it all. I was always uncomfortable mixing my friends from outside work with those at work. Only some westerners and their girlfriends and the Filipinos I knew really knew me. In the end, I did marry a woman from a bar and we are still together today. Life is good but I don't go advertising her history. I've made it into a good place of work and spend my time with a mix of classes here. Almost no one at my work knows my true story here. I guess in some ways I am still living a lie of sorts.

Anyways, all I am saying is whether it will or won't affect your social status and opportunities (in my case) those who believe it will, will react to it in strange ways. It really isn't about racism or any one thing. It could affect anyone and I would think does.

Any thai meeting your wife or anybody elses wife, husband, brother, etc. will, within ten seconds, know their exact position in the thai heirarchical system based on education, appearance, manner, accent, vocabulary and all the other hundreds of nuances of social intercourse that define life here.

For the heirarchy that's probably the case but my wife has never come to my office so few have met her. They may not know what she did in the past as she appears very modern and conservative in her dress. At work, we have some staff who come from rural backgrounds whose educational levels blast past the hiso city folk. Really in terms of educational background, some rural folks put the hisos to shame. These folks often tell me they resent the others who usually gather in cliques. Luckily my office offers a lot of privacy with everyone having their own offices. Plus since we are seen as 'higher' we never get intrusive questions from any other staff were I work. You just don't ask people questions about their personal lives here. So over the years I haven't been bothered by anyone.

My wife is very much a rural woman but she's modern and despite working in factories and bars she would pass as possibly a rural teacher or someone with some education to most who meet her. In reality, she just graduated from 6th grade which was common back when she was young in her hometown. Still, the few PhDs and others whom I work with who do know her like her and don't really care to put her through an inquisition. Just so you know, she's 47. She's not a young woman. Once you get to know someone eventually you just accept them as they are. Time cures all wounds and critics.
