Inventions you would like to see

I would like somebody to invent a pill which contained a mosquito repellent that was harmless to us yet would release its ingredient in our sweat and natural odour thus becoming the best mozzie repellent since the electric fan.

I once had an idea for an instant freezer which would have the reverse effect of a microwave but by placing items to be frozen in a conventional freezer an hour or so before you needed them would be a better idea.

It would also be great to see a cigarette substitute that cleaned your lungs and a 'live' as it happens version of Google Earth that had infinate clarity.

What would you like to see invented? Cures for cancer, AIDS, the common cold etc.. all go without saying, and I'm not sure if medicine is invented anyway, more discovered.

Wouldn't you just be watching other people watching Google Earth watching other people....

Rocket boots would be fun. You can't fly with them as such, just set a range, take off and fall back to Earth following a parabola....I haven't worked out the landing part yet, and this would be quite essential.
Back off Margaret, you're on a sugar rush!

Motorcycle airbags and an inflatable landing suit, gyroscopic leg braces for drunks and a toilet seat that lowers automatically 2 minutes after the sound of peeing stops. And a black light torch for showing up scammers after dark.

Mr Scamp, these are already available:
Mosquito pill: cup of fresh lemongrass tea every day.
Instant freezer: (free 'er or freeze 'im) Marmite retorts.
    Lung cleaner: Marlboro Extra Light.

^ I'll have to give the first one a try JG, I assume this is proven?

'Marmite Retorts' sounds like some kind of snack that RDN would like, and Marlboro Extra/Ultra Lights are not the equivalent of lung cleaner, more of sucking air through a McDonalds straw.

..Still, I'll green you if the lemongrass works.

Pluck a stalk of lemongrass root, wash and steep in boiled water like tea for about five minutes or so. You can reuse the stalk for another cuppa. Plant lemon grass near your outdoor patio or wherever you lounge outside. Helps to repel skitters.
The biters also like the sweet human sweat created by the excretion of the cheese, meat and grease you eat. Just add more fresh fruit and veg to your diet to change your sweat smell.

Lemongrass contains citronella which is typically used in the big smelly candles that one burns outside to repel mosquitoes.

I for one would like to see transparent metal invented.

I heard something about 'self cleaning windows' in the newest of skyscrapers in Honk Kong and Japan, is there any truth in this?

Great invention if it does exist, would be interested to know how that works.

    yes, it exists

the glass is covered by a film of some chemical that repels dirt

    How self-cleaning glass works

After years of development, Pilkington Activ™ is the world's first self-cleaning glass to use a microscopic coating with a unique dual-action. The first stage is "photocatalytic" - the coating reacts with daylight to break down organic dirt.
The second stage is "hydrophilic" - instead of forming droplets, rainwater hits the glass and spreads evenly, running off in a "sheet" and taking the loosened dirt with it, also drying quickly without leaving streaks.

anyway, you are a lazy bastard and could have googled that info without showing your ignorance

I can't imagine what kind of crap they used on the Jazz. I've used car wax here in the States in emergencies when Rain-X wasn't available and never had what happen to me in LOS happen. Maybe it was a combination of crap polish and the spewtum from all the diesel trucks mixed with rain.

I heard of this a few years ago. A property similar to water beading off of lotus leaves. Maybe works on everything, not only windows. Self-cleaning whatever.

I used to want a dishwater that unpacked itself and put all the crockery away, and a machine that put the ironing away in the right drawers and wardrobes, but now I have a maid and I realise that what I really needed all these years was either a maid or a wife.

I think that this is almost with us already in some form: A pocket-size foldable screen onto which one could read books, newspapers, do crosswords and sudoko. About 7'' x 5'' in size and with a feel and quality of reading 'real' text on quality parchment. If any TD members are engaged with the development of such a product, could you please encourage your colleagues and get a bloody move on.

^ Sounds like the future of laptops.

The hitchikers guide to the galaxy (the actual guide described in the book) sort of came true in the form of the internet.

What you describe Danbo I imagine would have 'thumb rollers' on each side to scroll down the page and one of those thin, touch screen pen things.

The parchment issue I think you're asking a bit much.

You're right, it is being developed and it won't be long before it's available. Read about it a few months ago in a computer nerd weekly magazine.

I think it would be great if they could invent dental fillings that were the same colour as your teeth so they didn't show up.

^ Yes but why didn't they do away with the silver ones when these came about?

Because the silver ones are cheaper?

Then invent an even cheaper white substance... Come to think of it a self cleaning tooth enamel laquer wouldn't be a bad idea.

I once conceived of a lever to pick the headcheese from behind the foreskin of a red veined wooder with a diamond head...PM me for a more detailed breakdown of my invention.
