Rip offs and scams to watch out for.

Rip offs and scams abound all over the world and Thailand is no exception. Many of us have heard horror stories of how a falang was done up in some wickedly clever scam. Thankfully, I havent fallen foul of anything too sinister or expensive myself . Some of the gem scams used to be very complicated and even folks who knew what they were doing got taken sometimes.

As this forum is often host to newcomers to Thailand I thought it might be helpful if we highlighted some of the things to watch for.

I would like to start with the tip to anyone who likes to drink to make sure that they either pay their bill as they go or when settling up at the end of a session to ensure that they get a copy of the check bin.

In my last soiree in Kanchanaburi I was done up twice with this one. The thing is that they often play on the fact that just because you can hardly walk that you wont remember that you actually paid your bill.
It is highly likely that you will return to that same bar the following evening only to be presented with the bin for a second time.

The first time it happened to me I just paid the bin from the night before, picked up my drink and then started to go back over events from the night before in my head coz I knew something just were not right. Some minutes later the cpu in my head downloaded the events surrounding the paying of the bin the night before and the more I thought about it the more sure I was that I had indeed paid it.
Rather than start an arguement I decided to simply finish my beer and vote with my feet. After all we were talking about 1200 baht so it just werent worth the angst.
I shuffled off to the next bar. Again, it was a bar that I had been a little tipsy in the night before. I sat down and ordered a beer and smiled at the little minx that was serving me. She returned with my beer and she too presented me with the bin from the night before saying "Yesterday, tonight, you not check bin."

I was about to start up and go into one like I do with the manager of the fruit and veg section of Ashgrove Woolworths, when in walks my mate with whome I had been drinking the night before. His Thai is infinitely better than mine and he quickly realized what was going on and launched into the gal in no uncertain terms. She immediately disappeared and nothing more was said.
He explained that they do this all the time if they think that they can get away with it.
Anyway, the moral of this story is either dont drink at all or pay as you go.

Now there must be other day to day scams that other members have had pulled on them so help the newbies out with your experience here and relate what happened and what you did about it.

    Please.

I never have a problem with taxis on Sukhumvit, only when trying to leave the Patpong area.

Taxi drivers occasionally run low on fuel and have to fill up usualy while the meter's running. Mai phen rai na? Fuck 'im he can run out. I'll flag another, for all I care.
I did get one to take me to the beach in Rayong from Rmakamhaeng for 1200 baht couple of years ago. We rolled down the windows smoked ciagettes and talked about women the whole way. Think he was for 'em.

Considering how many taxi's I would have caught in Thailand, the % of idiots is quite low, perhaps 2-3%, and of that % after a few quick thai words most of them sharpen up pretty quick.

Paying sin sot for a Thai women. This stickman article explains, from almost every possible angle, why non-Thais should never pay sin sot.http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/Reader/reader2172.htm

The line they feed you about respecting their culture is BS. In Indian culture, the bride's family pays a dowry. I wouldn't expect a Thai girl to pay me dowry, however. They are not Indian and will never be accepted as one, even if they marry an Indian. She will always be widesi (outside people). It's the same situation in their country. We will always be farang to them.

It seems to be only the whores and gold diggers who make an issue of sin sot. In my experience, the regular Thai girls I dated never mention sin sot or supporting them. They pride themselves on their financial independence and the respect of their co-workers/community. Some of them date farangs because Thai men are intimidated by them. Which is funny to me. Compared to the two girls I've dated in the US, the Thai girl I dated who was working the same job I have in the states was so much more sweet, fun-loving, and tolerant. Same with the secretary I dated. They didn't have that "treat me like a princess" attitude that Indian and Latina American girls do.

On a less serious note, the "no change for 20 baht" scam popular among Pattaya songteaw drivers. I would have at least 100 baht in 5 and 10 baht coins if you plan on visiting sin city for a week. You are going to be ripped off no matter what in Pattaya. But it is funner to have the gals do it instead of their songteaw driving boyfriend.

I can stomach the locals trying to stiff me; I would say it's even expected but when I get bloody westerners giving me the old 'The ATM has retained by bank card and I need 100B to get a taxi back to my hotel' story ........

I thought that begging was an occupation forbidden to foreigners in Thailand.

It aint only the Thais that try it on. When I was last in Kan I was sitting in a deckchair outside my room just having a nice lime and soda and reading the newspaper when an Australian chap walked past and said G'day. Naturally I returned his G'day and we started chatting. I smelled a rat as soon as he said that he had been running late to meet his Aussie galfriend in Paddy's Bar in Bali and that his galfriend had been killed in the bombing. Of course I offered my sympathies, as you do. His next sentence was about how he owned a huge dive business in Bali and that his boat alone was worth umpteen million wotsits. Without drawing breath he then went on to say that he had been out with his new Thai galfriend on a hired motorcycle the night before when ho somehow lost his wallet. More than that, he then went on to tell me that his father was also now gravely ill in Box Hill hospital in Melbourne and he needed to get there as quickly as possible because his father was not expected to last the week.
Naturally I again comiserated and he then asked if he could borrow 10,000 baht so that he could settle his bin with the guest house and get to Don Muang where he would plead with Singapore Airlines to get him to Melbourne.

I said to him that I had never in my life come across someone who had had such a bad run of luck. He smiled at me as though he had known me for years.

He again asked for my money and gave me a business card and said that he would pay me back as soon as he got to Melbourne.
I said to him "Listen mate, I have known you for just over 6 minutes and already your galfriend is dead, your father is dieing, your business in Indo is fokked yet you have a boat worth umpteen million wotsits and you have lost your wallet."

He looked all sheepish and forlorn and said "Yeah, I have just been unlucky." and put his arm around my back thinking that I was about to give him 10,000 baht.

    I said "Stroll on mate".

Do you know he then just looked at me and then walked off to look for another sucker. He couldnt have cared less.

    :sheesh:

I got to admit that some Aussies dont seem to give a shit about other folks and would be quite happy to have someone else pay their way. They must have been descended from the English bread thieves I reckon.

I paid 20B to have a piss yesterday - at the Poipet immigration office -

surely that's 'tourist price' - I mean 17B over the odds!

The thing that pisses me off about the taxis is the way they 'don't know where xxx is' - so they just fuck about for an extra 15 mins to scrape a few more Baht up - no tip for them!

maybe, but even well known landmarks (to a cabbie at least) they seem to 'pretend' not to know.

for example , Suan Lumpini , satani Klong Toey , satani Lumpini etc... ok my Thai accent sucks but come on..

I oncve caught a taxi on Rmakamhaeng wanted to go to the Hualampong to buy a ticket for the next day. This is not a short ride. Guy takes me through sme back alleys and drops me in klogtoey at a little pillbox of a railway station. gets me my ticket, takes me home. Refused a 100 baht tip.
You get worse treatment by and large from SF or LA taxi drivers than you ever do from BKK taxis i'm afraid. Gets so bad you can't find a taxi and when you do it's a free-for-all fight to make your way into the seat!
Going from the financial district to the ariport it's cheaper, quicker and a hell of lot more comfortable to flag down an empty limo.
Biggest problme I've repeatedly had was just a flat refusal to take me to Rmakamhaeng from lower Suk at rush hour. One guys grabs me at the curb we roll abotu 100 meters 'till he finds out wher i want to go then stops says no. Fucken' guy didn't ask for the 35 baht on the meter really wanted to refuse to pay have a bit of a fight and all, but no joy.

I got a taxi from Suk to Ko chang ferry a few years back for 2800 he tried to charge me more once we got to near the ferry but far enough away to be a pain until we pointed out that he was stopping on the main songtaew line to the ferry.

I tipped him 200 anyway cause he was a nice lad who had just tried it on a little bit and was fair game IMHO and he had just spent four hours with two pissed up idiots stopping every hour for beer and ciggies.
