Do you think Thais hold a grudge?

Do you think some Thais will hold a grudge for years and then get revenge when all is forgotten by everyone except them?
I was thinking a farang friend, long-timer in Thailand with a dive business. Nice guy, partyer but not obnoxious. He was stabbed to death (16 in the back).
Friends and colleagues ruled out mafia (oh, Koh Phangan, of course, no mafia there), biz probs (none), GF probs (none).
I then remembered that he accidently hit and killed a drunken/drugged Thai teen who swerved in front of his vehicle several years before.
Heard from Thai friends that some Thai people can let something simmer for years before getting revenge. Any take on this?

I have heard this too, though I'm not sure they are any more or less a vengeful nation than we are, they do seem to be able to conceal it and let it brew for years whereas we simply don't have the patience. A Thai will always remember if you have wronged them just as they will also remember if you owe them anything.

    Elephants too are like this.
"I'm an outsider by choice, but not truly. It's the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out. I'd rather be in, in a good system. That's where my discontent comes from: being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin' straight ahead. Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

    some thais yes.

    some thais no.

    some farang yes.

    some farang no.

also accidently killing someone is a pretty big thing to have forgotten, be they thai or farang.

Maybe, Maybe not. Anything to do with long term planning does not apply. Holding grudges for a life time, most certainly, it is actually passed from one generation to the next to the point people are not too sure why the neighbor is to be hated but Dad said so because that's the way he remembers it.
The relatives of the dead boy getting drunk, working themselves up and suddenly catching a glimpse of your friend, happening to be pass by, triggering their recollection is a possible scenario.
As I was told by a Thai once in Chumpon "the trouble with you Farang is that you are thinking too far ahead". Make what you can out of it.

Agreed, waiting seven years for revenge seems unlikely, one week is a long time in this place. Perhaps his business was too successful, that always causes problems.

That's hardly a 'Thai' trait, can be found anywhere, specially rural communities.

Agree with all. I'm not talking about the Monty-Cap or Hatfield/MaCoy scenarios, which are pandemic traits. But doing something wrong to a Thai (farang or not) and then getting retribution years later when you think all is forgotten. Waiting for the right time to get revenge.

I would agree that being stabbed sixteen times in the back would suggest a revenge/hatred murder but it could have happened in any country.
Also why have you assumed that it was a thai that murdered him ?

True, Thetyim. It happened on a major tourist beach about 4am in a public toilet. Whoever it was must have been zonked on something and then released his/her anger/hatred on him. Maybe even mistook him for someone else. Crazed psychos are available in every nationality and gender.

I'm surprised nobody's replied with the most obvious - Thai pooying definitely hold a grudge. Usually the situation involves a husband who strayed...

btw...before you say any chick would - Thais take special vengence...

Clearly a racial hate crime. Non-Whites are prone to do stuff like this.

My Q here was whether you noticed if long-harboured resentment and revenge was more prevalent in Thai people, whether as an atavistic quality or not. Not whether my friend was a twisted sex fiend or deserving of his death, which he was not. Hisssssss.

By refering to your friends murder without initially posting the details you lead us down this side soi.

True, Begbie. But I added that info only as a possible revenge example, not as the focus of this thread. I had heard that Thais can keep a grudge simmering, waiting and waiting with much patience for the right moment to strike back.

There is a saying that, 'Revenge is a dish best eaten cold', but this sounds like a case of being "in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people - just wrong"

Sounds like a Katoey crime to me. Doubt it was revenge. There is a saying, "Don't hang around public toilets at 4am". Sound advice in this case.

many Asians can keep something simmering....same as Europeans.Depends on who you deal with.Still,if your friend was a nonce,it's no wonder.

Maybe, maybe the guy just had bad Karma after killing that guy.
