    Simple Silly Meaningless Asian Advertising

Saw this the other day on our bus trip back to Pampanga.

It is an ad for SmartBro broadband (which I use here) and like a lot of advertising here in SE Asia, it features hip and with it teenagers sporting an expression as if to say 'YEAAAHHH' - in this case, the internet service of which the main selling point is the speed ...is being represented by some teenage girl holding a bass guitar (which is not plugged in) and appears to have an upward wind blasting her hair aloft as she stands poised in what SE Asians would probably refer to as an 'action shot'. She also has her mouth open as if to say 'YEEAAAH MAN'.

What the fuck is that all about? Completely irrelevant.

Nothing wrong with the logo, the 'Bro' is presumably an abv for 'BROadband' and I like the little mouse arrow in the 'O' and the electricity font down below. All the relevant information is there but the picture is meaningless and is the same type of silly image used to promote Pepsi, hair gel and lord knows what else.

Maybe I'm being a bit petty but I wanted to bring it up, I think it annoys me because there is little sophistication or imagination in a lot (not all) but too much advertising in this part of the globe.

    Here's another one nearby.

Again we have teenagers sporting similar and poses holding musical instruments, WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH SPEEDY INTERNET???? Incedentally, none of these people are actors or pop stars.

Why not the image of a bullet or a cheetah or even a silly cartoon charicature of a PC - at least it would be relevant.

    CNUTS.

    depends

if the ads get attention (got yours!) and they put the image of the company in your mind, they are working

they might as well call their company 'clever dick'

Good advertising. The girl makes me think about sex and porn was the main reason why i got my first broadband connection in the Uk in 2001

The advertising worked in getting my attention but didn't work in getting me to buy SmartBro because I already have it.

I wanted the fastest internet connection and that was it, in fact the ad would have put me off buying it in the same way that I refuse to drink Coca Cola because it annoys me that they advertise it to death when people are fully aware that it exists, is available and can buy it if they so please to fuck up their teeth and stomach and pile on a shit load of weight.

The skin whitening cream ads crack me up everytime. They are on constantly when certain tv shows are on Thai tv.

I particularly like the one where there are 3 pictures of a girl in three different stages of "whiteness". And the way the first one shows how sad she is then starts to look happier then all white and happy.

Thats the way it really is. You will not be happy until you are white skinned.

I've got to say that I can't see the connection between the guitar playing antics and the product - Maybe it's a clever advertising technique - A person sees the ad and asks themselves, "What the bloody hell has guitar playing got to do with broadband....ooh just remembered, I need some broad beans, better go to Tescos"....Something like that maybe.

OK it looks as if the ad is aimed at the youth market, and you are obviously too old to be in that

imagine, if you were 19 again, see that ad, with those broad bean playing people, of course you would rush out and order it
    I have reported your post

Was in RG yesterday, as you know mrs likes shops displaying sale or discount signs, disappears into shop with sign saying, BUY ONE, GET ONE.

Well, believe it or not, before agreeing she could have some schmutter she totally couldn't live without, I had to confirm that the sign did indeed mean get one free, and imagined being told after the sale - why the long face, you bought one and you got one!

Have I been here too long?

I saw an advert for Samsung mobile in which minature pies and tarts were made, and catapulted at flies, wasps, spiders, beetles and bees.

I think it's worth posting a link because THIS is where advertising gets extreemly imaginative yet holds on to a thread of relevance.

In my opinion its up there with the Honda Accord ad and my favourite - the dancing transformer Citroen C4.

There's also the banned ad for the VW Polo which is funny as fuck, I suppose you want links to all these now.

This is advertising at it's most creative and best.

Amazing, is that shop still going. I will never forget it.
When I first saw it the sign said "R Soles" back in 1970 and was in a side street off the Kings Road..
That guy has a lot to answer for. I was banned from art classes permanently for including that shop in a High Street painting.
My protests went unheeded and I was banned from art lessons for six years. Mr Gee (the art master) you are a cnut.

Mind you the shop next door I called B. Ollocks the Butcher.

    checking was a good idea.

It would not have been a surprise if you took 2 items to the cashier and were simply charged for 2 items

There is an animated advert for the One World group of airlines, running on the front page of The Nation, on line edition, at the moment.

They seem to have Bangkok and Mumbai located correctly but what is the new continent that London, Paris and Madrid have moved to?

    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.
