Are you thinking of leaving Thailand?

Looking round the various Thailand Forums it seems that a lot of people have left Thailand or are on the verge of leaving Thailand.

Okay quite a few of them are unqualified teachers that have been working illegally and don't fancy spending time in a Thai Jail, but even people that dont work here are leaving, 1 guy I know has just had enough of Thais and is moving back to the States, a couple of guys I know have moved onto Cambodia.

I can see people getting pissed off with the continual changes in the visa rules and just get to the point when they just say fok Thailand and move on, also the increasing anti farang feelings by the Thais don't help that much.

So will you be moving on?

I can't afford to leave. Maybe we should start a "Who's got the oldest 'TM card' in their passport?" poll. I might win that one.

This would be my ideal, although maybe a year between 'here' and 'there', and not necessarily this 'here' - I wouldn't mind finding another 'here', so really what I'm saying is a year 'there' and a year 'there', but maybe 'here' - Why isn't this a poll option?

    Why I left.

Get away before I'm financially committed to the place.

One of my friends that I knew from my first days in town (we both arrived at the same time) has just bought a town house and a car with his wife on finance.

He's committed to staying. Scares the shit out of me doing that.

There hasn't been many changes to the long term visas, has there?

And I'm yet to see the anti farang feelings, but then again, I don't get out much.

I will be going back to England sometime for a couple of years, but I'm delaying the inevitable at the moment.

Take the chance and enjoy life when you're still young, you can work when you get old.

I haven't ever held down a real job.

i did work once for P&G but that was an internship and I hated it. Don't remember much either as I was wasted for the year.

I do remember crying a lot on Wednesdays in the green house at the bank of the site.

Left 6 months ago. Here's why:

    1. Money. Getting paid 30,000 baht just didn't cut it. I make over four times that in Korea, plus my airfare, visa, and apartment are all paid for.

    2. Racism. Yeah, there's racism here in Korea, but I felt that it was more of an issue in Thailand. I'm only looked at as money in many eyes of the Thais, and just hated the anti-farang feeling every time I stepped outside.

    3. Working for Thais. I think this is what really caused me to leave. Give me a red if you want, but Thais should not have any power, at least in schools. I was working under two headteachers, and both of them were morons. They always made decisions that were completely illogical and selfish for their own gain, rather than the students' or teachers'. The head of the school was the king moron, who once compared our students to Genghis Khan and in an assembly, told the student body that they all should epitomise and look up to this great leader.

But I still cried when I got on the plane to go home, because I fokiking love the place. Wouldn't trade my experience there for anything, and the expats that I met in Thailand are a much better batch than I've ever met in my 1.5 years in Korea.

Are you still out here Durian?

I avoid ex-pats like the plague. reading the internet forums most of them appear to have serious issues.

I do sometimes miss my mates back home (thailand) but they are only a phone call away.

Yeah quirrel --- my username is oxfordstu over at Dave'$ and ajarn (changed it over here to avoid looking too arrogant haha). Been teaching middle school for a few months now. And yeah, I try to avoid expats over here as well. Most of them just want to get drunk every night and piddle their savings away. You'll learn a hell of a lot more and have more fun hanging out with Koreans, especially if you can pick up some of the language (which isn't too difficult).

Working with Thai suppliers and vendors is already difficult, I can't imagine having someone as a boss, with all the politics involved. Takes a lot of nerve and courage to be directed and led by clueless backstabbing racist monkeys.

I am not really leaving, but I will do rotations between Singapore and Thailand. As the rent seems reasonable in Singapore, I will rent a small apartment over there for doing business. The idea of leaving Thailand temporarily for business is exciting for me, as I fucking hate working with Thais. They are just too dysfunctional and are not willing to improve things or even themselves. They just can't learn, which is sad and pathetic.

I would seriously consider leaving if I had a young family because I think, overall, both the standards of education and morals in Thailand are so low that it would be almost criminal not to.

However, as I'm a single man with no family, why the fuck should I

actually, I was impressed by the private International school here (the good ones), there seems to be ok

They cost as much as in Singapore, so not sure where the profits go, because local Thai Staff is dirt cheap compared to Singapore
