    Going green

According to the BBC a moment ago, the farts and burps of the world's 3bn cows and sheep are responsible for an astonishing 10% of the greenhouse gasses that are said to cause global warming...this is more than is caused by motor driven vehicles or factory emissions.

And yes they did say the word fart.

According to the BBC, Climate Change is now official, indisputable, and we must all do something about it.

They now have a "Climate Watch" programme about every half hour (OK, a bit of an exaggeration) and even had on one of these programmes a story about a lake in Russia (I think) that had been partially drained, much to the detriment of the local fishermen. Now the government has decided to allow it to fill up again.

Just what that has to do with climate change, God only knows. But it must be, because it was on the BBC.

Whooops! I didn't realise this thread was in Issues! I'll clean up my previous post and see what link I can find. My bad!

    Edit:

There's nothing on the BBC World website about it that I can find, but it might have been about Lake Sevan in Armenia.

But as I said, to have a lake drainage problem in a programme about climate change is just silly and devalues their argument.

What about people farts. Why should they discriminate against animals.Animals don't know any better do they.Do elephants rate?On a proportion basis, the old elephant must really chug them out.

Don't blame the messenger for innacurate or incomplete reporting. Mind you being on the BBC is reason enough to stock up and run for the hills.

What would happen if you fed cattle, sheep and err... elephants a diet of bakedbeans and fried onions?

Elephants are protected, so could be the Beeb's green agenda hopes to turn us all into vegetarians via a global cull of sheep and cattle, in order to save the world.

Won't work coz as the farm animal population diminishes they become protected species too, though we shouldn't expect them to think that far forward.

Y'know I was just thinking a moment ago that we don't have anywhere near enough global-warming threads on TD. Reincarnation may not apply to humans but it certainly applies to threads.

Well, we haven't had a thread where one can spout nonsense about farting elephants to slag of GW, obviously a much appreciated opportunity.

I think maybe culling the Americans may help, or at least make them go on a diet, the average weight of a normal American is 195 kilos, human meat wise there is more weight in America than any other 2 continents combined.

    Here

I suggest you report it to the Beeb, they're used to incoming trivia from the population at large.

Thanks for your input but I don't need to, there are addinmashins for that, though the disparity between your figure of <100m cows vs the Beeb's 3bn cows and sheep leaves me highly suspicious of your sources, or fancy.

What do you mean, "culling" "meat"? Are you suggesting that...how disgusting!

3 billion cows living at all time ? sounds a bit high. Maybe they were including the dead one.

Dead ones don't burp and fart much but you may have missed out the sheep bit, and as far as I know there are loads of them in Oz and Wales otherwise they'd really be up the creek.
