    Was Timothy Leary Right?

Here's an interesting article in Time Magazine questioning whether psychedelics are not good for you after all.

I knew that Laguna Beach Sunshine was alright!

Time to invest in experimental pharmaceutical companies?
This research reminds me of an experiment where folks chucked an insane girl into a pit of snakes to cure her insanity, on the counter belief that if they threw a sane girl in there, she would go crazy.
The Indian shamans in America have used peyote for centuries to forecast the weather, outlooks on war with other tribes and stock prices. Why not use it if it works?
I used mind-altering drugs in my teens and look at me now.

I just downloaded one of Leary's books. Can't remember what one it is. It's in audio book format as well so I can sit back and enjoy it.

    Thanks for this link, Booner.
I think the answer has been at hand for a long time: Used with medical and therapeutic guidance, psychedelics may well be beneficial for defined therapeutic purposes, specially Exstacy, LSD is a highly potent, overpowering drug by comparison.
Using indiscriminately for leisure purposes is obviously a different thing, but drugs can still be "good for you" in a different sense.

There are some who should not try it unless under very controlled circumstances. Art Linkletter's daughter comes to mind. For those who do not know the story, she thought she could actually fly and...out the window she went and, unfortunately, it was from an elevated position.

I never had a bad trip (out of a dozen or so).

But I preferred the naturals...peyote, mushrooms.

I had, and know several people who went psychotic from acid being the catalyst to set it off, the occurence is widely underreported in the alternative community, and exaggerated beyond proportion in anti-drug propaganda.

Well, there was some bad acid going around. Just had to trust your source and not experiment indiscriminately.

Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd for one.
I had a few trips in my 20's, mostly great fun. Timothy Leary was right in at least one way- it does give you a whole new insight into the nature and existence of consciousness.
Then I introduced a mate to a trip, and he couldn't handle it- he was seriously convinced he was going to die! If you know acid (clearlights these were), then you know I mean seriously convinced. Bad night. Turned out he was no good on mushrooms either- psychedelics are definitely not for him!
I took a trip, a few months later, when I had some niggling problems bugging me. It probably wouldn't qualify as a 'bad' trip, but I got to understand the two edged sword aspect of acid. That was my last trip.

It's a tough one to quantify. It does you no physical harm, neither is it addictive. But if you're in the wrong mindset, or you can't handle psychedelics (which you won't know til you try) it can be downright dangerous. Definitely controlled, friendly, safe surroundings only if you're a newbie, and must try.

When taken in a friendly environment, psilocybin is an awesome experience with very pleasant and long-lasting emotional effects. Rumor has it that psilocybin was floating around in mushroom soup at some Thai island restaurants years ago. It can create a pleasant synesthesia, blurring of boundaries between the senses, especially when listening to Pink Floyd. Ethnobotanist Terence McKenna, author of Food of the Gods and a brilliant proponent of psychedelics, died way too early 7 years ago. As one gets older and more useless, experimentation with such plant life makes more sense. But the laws of Thailand are too severe for a prudent person to take such drugs. And the social climate in the USA is too negative for one to truly enjoy them. Maybe the pharmaceutical companies will develop 'acceptable' forms of psilocybin for therapy. When it becomes patentable and big business can reap profits from it, perhaps psilocybin will make a comeback. It's quite a fascinating substance.
