Have you paid a bribe in the last year?

Thailand comes in at a moderate 18% on this study:-

BBC News - Map: Which country pays the most bribes?

One person in four has paid a bribe to a public body in the last year, according to a survey carried out in 95 countries by Transparency International.

The poor record of some African nations on bribery stands out. Sierra Leone has the highest number of respondents admitting to having paid a bribe - 84% - and seven out of nine of the countries with the highest reported bribery rate are in sub-Saharan Africa. See the list below. The countries with the lowest reported bribery rate are Denmark, Finland, Japan and Australia, they all have a bribery rate of 1%.

Near my fourth year here and I haven't paid a single bribe. I should mention that I don't frequent places where one is likely to be asked for a bribe so not much of an achievement. This for me is only relevant to government officials... As far as Thai family members go... I've paid a bit here and there. Never been hassled by any BIB anywhere in Thailand and I've rented jet skis, motorcys , cars and women without issue.

    Don't think so.

The last time was 500b when coming over the crest of a hill at about 150kph in the Hilux, on the Miterprapoop highway about two years ago.

So they were to ticket you for driving too slow so you bribed them?

I'd have no qualms about paying a bribe if I was guilty of something, I'd probably pay it too if I could avert going the police station.

But in your scenario Breny, I'd have had a good go at pissin all over the bag, then shaking the Farang schlong in front of the fukkers

    That's for sure.

The latest is the Passing Lane Scam. On certain stretches of dual carriageway in Suphan for example, the BIB will pull you over if you stay too long in the right-hand lane.

I think i paid a bribe a few weeks ago.

I say "think", because the immigration bloke insisted it wasn't "corruption money", but i'll be fucked if i know what the 2,000 bht was for.

Incidentally, they turned a few of us over at Ranong immigration last year.
4 of us turned up mid morning. Immy officer told us he was going to lunch, and we should pay 100bht each for him to cancel his lunch, or come back after 2 0'clock.

I remember a while ago a cop stopped you for some despicable crime, e.g driving too fast with an doddery person in the car.
Anyway He stuck his grubby fist in the car for money and you refused to play the game.

Get off yer high horse. The cops get paid fuck all. When they receive 'bribes' it's usually at a discount and convenient to the offender, but they are still getting punished. It just doesn't need to go through a bureaucracy which the tax payer pays for. You break the law, you pay the cop. Good system.

Not condoning high level corruption, cops trafficking drugs etc, but for them to supplement their income pocketing fine money from real offenders is how they roll.

At least road users aren't marginalised like they are in the west, where kids (in Australia it's shocking) have to pay extortionate rego fees, and silly fines in zones with limits way under what they need to be just so the government can revenue raise. If you can't pay the government sponsored extortion, they keep stacking up the fines and ban you from using the roads altogether.

In the last year I've paid several bribes to police for minor traffic offenses (speeding on highways, sometimes not even speeding they just want 200bt ... fair enough they can have it whadda ya gonna do eh).

They tried to squeeze me at a local level for doing legitimate business. They said I need to contribute more to the community. I refused to pay (they never asked for money directly) so they asked me to volunteer to teach english to kids, to which I agreed. I'm pretty sure the kids I'm teaching (a hand picked group)'s parents are paying for the sessions and the poo yai is lining his pockets. Well played I say, way to get paid in a round about way. We could learn a lot from the Thais. The way westerners roll is so square and sterile. Australia is so over-regulated it makes me sick.

200 bht for using the 'right turn only' lane to get in front at the lights in Ratchasima.

    Fair enough.
