The old Winson Hong supermarket in Finsbury Park used to get a lot of Thai stuff for my mum, me and my sister were often sent there with a shopping bag to get it.
My kids love it when I cook, because they know they're not going to get boring Thai food.

It was the Midget's birthday a few weeks ago, so she did 2 stuffed ducks with roast potatoes and a couple of other bits and pieces. The Outlaws couldn't eat it because it didn't taste like rotting roadkill.

I reciprocated when my brother in law had a going away party a week or so later by dozing in the car with the AC on. I was driving, so couldn't drink. Have you ever tried socialising with Isaan Thais when sober?

My mum didn't have the 'All Thai things are superior' attitude, she made us what was healthy. We sure didn't eat somtam. I did grow up eating a lot rice, but it seemed normal to us. Obviously we craved western food, and we got it too.

As for socialising with Isaan Thais, no is the answer.

Very very few were back in the west 25 to 30 years ago that might be why.

Your mom was not from Isaan so no. The rice kind of goes hand in hand with being a born asian no matter what country you are from. Of course it was normal. Especially as you say your dad cant cook.

That's a fact. It is a risk of piles as is excessive hot water.

Just got back from the grocery store and had a hard time getting the wife out. She was blown away by the sheer quantity of fresh and packaged foods in a single building. We figured that the vegetables here in Corvallis cost about three times what they are at the market back in Mae Taeng.

Driving south on I-5 yesterday, she kept remarking on all the recreational vehicles heading north. Seems like every sixth vehicle was an RV. Doesn't look the price of gas has slowed down the RV manufacturing industry much.

Good for you mate to introduce your wife to your country.

I met my Thai wife just one large city over from where you are now.

We lived in Canada for over 25 years. She loves North America for all the reasons you stated in your first post. But we like it here in CM too..Specially me.

Have fun and let her live it up for the fun month. Keep us posted. I like this thread.

But it has shit to do with anything Pat. As I have said you are bored, dont seem to work, and are posting shit.

It has to do with simple forum etiquette or more simply plain manners.

You know, Skype is the solution these days. Unlimited (i.e., fair use) calling to Thai mobile numbers from anywhere for less than 20USD a month.

Yeah, we have talked that it would be nice to have a place here in addition to the place we have north of CM. This area is a lot like Thailand with all the farming and open markets going on. We hit 34 C here this past week but it cooled right back down to the mid 20's.

This week's impressions from the wife are on the high level of service you get from everyone from waiters to sales people. She now understands "pride of workmanship" as well. Last night we went to a listen to a good Blue's band and the volume was just right. I pointed out that in Thailand you would have another band playing right next to the first one with both turning up the volume to volcanic proportions.

Glad to see she is having fun Thailazer. My gal is slowly growing attached to being here HOWEVER the big negative is the cost of living and she is very wise to it. While we enjoy all the nice things it does come with a steep price...Sales Tax, Property tax, Car payments, Auto insurance, homeowners insurance, Income taxes, medical, Dental, Gas costs, utilities and eating out is extremely costly. Its clear to me that unless you are sitting FAT with cash you will have to work.

We were just in Las Vegas for 4 days. Went and looked at some homes, also looked at a Thai Restaurant opportunity. We happened to be there in record heat(51c). Of course you are always inside some place or in an AC'd car so it really does not bother people much. While quite affordable compared to California, it is a desert. I still think best thing to do is split time. Maybe own in TL and when here rent a place. Beauty is you can return and live in any state you want to have some fun.

Mr. Thaiazer, you might look into house tradiing/swaping. We are getting a lot of offers from our personal friends from Vancouver to Los Angeles. Be mean but love to trade our friends their house in Monterrey, March, April and May....) still that is when we like to go to Vancouver.. But even as old as I am both folks are still alive so we stay with them some. Rode my bicycle today and only got cut off 2 times...there is a God..

2 years ago my wife (back then girlfriend) visited me in the Netherlands.

Now you should it ain't easy to get a tourist visa because our government is scared that people will stay permanently and illegally. Without your own house or a permanent job, the chances of getting in are very slim. My wife had no permanent job and no own house so desperately I wrote a letter that I would be covering for her and that we don't even WANT to live permanently in the rotten country of the Netherlands. We were lucky, she got her 1 month visa.

So this day in April, me and my parents were awaiting her on the airport. She should have landed around 15:00. Around 17:00 we were still waiting, but the plane wasn't delayed. 18:00.... I start to worry... ask a clerk to announce her name, but still no girlfriend 3 hours later. Then someone from the pasport check calls, and tells that my girlfriend didn't have enough cash money with her... So I just picked her up and showed them some money more.

So she arrived in April, the day before my mother's birthday. The next day she met the whole family for the first time in her life (she had met my parents and brother before). I showed her all attractions in the country and we had a good time.

I think it's a miracle that I've met my wife, I will tell you why: when she arrived in the Netherlands she was coughing. A few days before she would leave, still coughing. Because I didn't (and don't) trust Thai doctors, I took her to a Dutch hospital. They found out that she had TBC, so she wasn't allowed to fly back and had to stay until the treatment was finished (about a year). She got government money each month, about E300 per month.
Most important of all: my whole family had to be checked for TBC too, they found something in my mother's lungs but it turned out not to be TBC but cancer. Luckily her treatment was just in time and she survived.

So quite a lot happened in the year my wife was in the Netherlands, and all for the good!

Interesting posts and ideas there fellas.

Our trip took a downturn today. A few days ago my wife had a few bumps and a rash similar to mosquito bites. This morning, she had several hundred of these bumps. Looking at the bed, we see bugs and small bloody spots from where some of the bugs were crushed. From what we have learned today, bed bugs are a BIG problem in the USA today. We were staying in a mid-range hotel and apparently it doesn't matter what level of place you stay at. We went to a better place and did a thorough inspection of the new digs. Hopefully did not bring any hitch hikers. The hotel we checked out of offered us a refund of several days and then had us sign a release form before they honored it. Wife's itching is going down now but not a fun day.

Yesterday we watched an Independence Day parade in Independence Oregon. What a great experience and the better half got a great insight into American culture.

I saw a couple of TV shows on this. Bed bugs are also a problem here in the gulf. We had them for a while in an apartment that we had newly rented. It was furnished and lived in by the landlord previously.

There have been a couple of news stories on bed bugs here explaining why they have become so much more common. It's the same for the US, with so many people flying internationally, they carry the bed bugs either in their clothes, or their fabric luggage. They're really difficult to get rid of, but nice to hear that the hotel compensated for this.

Interesting idea and one I might look into. I know missus and I talked about buying and renting here while away but then what? You want to come back and have to kick your tenants out?

I have looked at so many ideas to swing living in both places and the only really manageable options seem to be 1) Renting in both places or 2) Own in TL and rent here. Owning here(US) and renting there is costly due to living costs associated with owning a house. Whichever route I go, The missus and I definitely want to bounce back and forth.

Really???? I have not read nor heard about it. We have traveled around lots and stayed in mid priced places and some top notch deals and have never experienced any issues. Sorry to hear about her encounter with bed bugs.

Most the issues that the missus has heard or read about with Thais visiting on extended stays was dry skin issues(almost like psoriasis) and that is more dependent on where you are humidity wise. My GF has only suffered with a few short bouts of dry skin and found a few moisturizers at the store to remedy the issue in a day or so.

Here is a funny one for you Thailazer... Has your Gal gone through the Hotdog/Hamburger - Bun packaging deal yet?

I went through it about 8 months ago. Was hilarious. "Why do they put 10 hot dogs per pack and only 8 buns" and "Why don't they sell hamburger buns separately?" "You want to make 2 hamburgers(Pork of course) and you have to buy a bag of 8?"

I think her number 1 observation is we as Americans waste an awful lot of food. She has learned the system quickly and really minimizes waste.

    Keep the updates coming.

Yes, it is a rising problem and the hotel chains are doing their best to keep it all quiet. Check out this webfacto:

    How Common are These Rashes?

The National Pest Management Association has stated that prior to the year 2000, as few as 25% of the pest control companies in the United States had encountered an infestation of these nasty bugs. Currently that number has risen to 95%.
At this point in time 76% of the United States pest control professionals think that this bug is the most difficult pest to eradicate.

Oh that will throw water on a good time. Hope she heals soon...and she will..Did read about the bed bug problem. We have stayed in many a hotel and just been lucky...

Yes, owning 2 places is a great idea but a lot of work and expensive. One reason we will checked into some of the house swapping sites.

Get that bride of yours some needed rest and healing and get her back on the adventure trail....Get well young lady...

We traveled extensively throughout Asian countries without drama or surprise for the missus. Decided on a holiday in Aus. Her first visit to a farangland. Landed in Melbourne, rented a car and headed for town. Came across some blokes doing road construction. Suddenly she says, "Stop the car, stop the car". Puzzled, I asked "Why". She said, "I've never seen a farang doing manual labor. I must take some pictures of the construction crew. No one back home will believe it without pics."

The crew were happy and pleased to pose for the pics. Must have wonder why in hell she wanted pics but bet they never received so much attention before.

Interesting read. I guess we have been extremely lucky based on the stats. I would have to guess that it would boil down to hotel chain and their cleanliness protocol. So many hotel chains "lie" about linen change to save cost. For us I know we always bring our own towels and she always insists on "sleeping above the sheets".

I know I would never stay in a Motel 6,Days inn or a Mom and Pop place. I will spend a few extra bucks to stay in a Marriott. While you can only assume they properly clean their bedding, one will never know especially in low cost hotels and motels.

Hope her recovery has been fast
