    2. You are surrounded by socially inept individuals, most being British petty criminals looking for a new mark, TEFLers trying to live without responsibilities, and all kind of "colorful" characters who are escaping their homeland for various reasons (I have met quite a few of those).
    3. The only cultural activities are drinking, exotic dining, whoring, and shopping. Great for a 2 months vacation, but after that ?
    4. Too many desperately trying to stay there and being paranoicly scared of returning home, thinking that Thailand is the answer to protect them from that chaotic world.
    5. At the end, farangs live in a parallel world next to the Thai parallel world, and stare at each other through their bubble walls

    Dear Papillion
I read your initial thread and could not help but observe indications of psychological defects in your character i.e.
    1. The tendency to write a sentence and then just add a word out of sequence.
    2. Laziness in the use of indefinite articles.
    3. Usage of American English.
    4. Insecurity, giving rise to an aggressive style of writing.
    5. Spelling mistakes.
    6. Missing punctuation, inclusive full stops.
You have me at a disadvantage in knowing your occupation, but I can only assume it to be something akin to a doorman or a tuk tuk operative.
He's not a native English speaker so this is his second or third language, maybe fourth if he is Belgian.
I don't know about you, but I'd be well proud to be as good as that in four languages aside from my mother-tongue.

Criticise a man for his opinions, not his level of adequacy in spelling (though native speakers don't have an excuse to practice bad English)

That usage of American English (vs. Old English - cue Chaucer) will get you every time!

If Thailand is a bubble, where is the 'real world'? Europe? The USA? I don't think so.

    .

That's about right but you can also say a lot of negative things about western society if you are honest.

What do westerners in the west do for 12 mths? Work, drink, whinge, wish they were on a tropical island far away from their shitty lives

Sorry but I can only respond to one half of your assumptions, in so far as I am not familiar with the word “TEFLer.” As for the remaining 50%, you are incorrect, as I work/live in Papua New Guinea. But then perhaps you have some original alternate name for that country as well.

Will it ever see the good old days again? I think not. Before when the farang was superior to the peasant Thais it was great, but now they have rumbled the farang because the farang plays the same tune over and over and thinks they're the first to do it.

What new strategy could the farang use?
IT ...so many opportunities to use and abuse the vain corrupt avaracious dopes of Asia and most of the developing world, on that score... seriously... they're just never going to have the culture or infrastructure to deal with it like in police-state western developed countries.

Interesting quick assessment Bfly. I agree.

Answering your question, I think(generally speaking) the answer is YES for the majority. Some live in a drunken stupor, some because they have mental health issues, some are in total denial, some think it is a place to exploit uneducated peasants(Most men quickly get schooled by those young uneducated beauties and the tables are turned so who are the uneducated ones )

With that said I am glad to have lived in Thailand. I could not imagine being stuck there having drank the Kool-aid and "buying the farm" so to speak. I initially enjoyed it but as time passed I found many things bothersome which is why I departed. Some were of what you noted. Nothing to do with not being able to make it in Thailand, just chose not to fight it to stay when I did not have too.

After 5 years doubt I will ever live their full time. Being back in the US now with my Thai gal I am glad I am back. She is really enjoying it here and I can see her leaning more and more everyday about only living in Thailand part time. Funny as when she left her intention was to return back quickly.

Its great to leave ones home country and then return to see it through different eyes. Of course with the weather here averaging 28c to 30c during the day and evening around 20c and mosquito free sure makes it nice

I know a Thai chick who had just began studying at North London Uni a few years back, she was adamant that when she was finished she'd be straight back to Thailand. Every few months this wish grew thinner and thinner until eventually she married a British born Thai bloke and stayed.

Now she describes the annoyances of Thailand much the way that tired farangs do. Frustrated by her own 'people' she said, and cited 'kreng jai' as one of the worst aspects of Thai culture.

No you didn't, Butterfly. You've got it pretty clear as far as I can see. I don't know your history but I would guess you once fit into some of the above but moved on. Just my guess of course. You described my situation to a T as I have been a TEFLer for some time. It is as you say but I would say that it's really quite dependent on the individual. Stereotypes reflect very common realities but not 100% truth. I wonder what your reason is for staying connected to Thailand. Are you still in Thailand or just connected to this forum?

the US is a very nice place to stay, above all the west coast, you would be crazy to leave that place to live full time in Thailand

I always wanted to move to SF, hopefully I will some day

of course the only problem in the US are the fat americans with their horrible women princess attitude, and the rich food

^A Thaiophile would wax lyrical about how peaceful their village in Korat, Buri Ram and Udon are, and how the locals are so nice and friendly when really they're all laughing behind his back.

or simply don't care about farangs, period, which makes the whole point of moving there pointless, since you will be regarded as a nobody in the middle of nowhere

how fucked up is that ?

Fucked up more when the 'wife' is giving out loans locally using his money while he sits about on the porch or at some 'expat' bar comparing lifestyles with a bunch of other illusionists
