I am not sure about the house design, but I also think that a lot of you are being very patronising

a nasty trait that a lot of expats acquire to defend themselves from new experience

    another remark

This rather formal pond has been built using the "steel -- who needs it?" philosophy of Thai pond building. It will crack and be rendered useless in months.
is inaccurate. I suppose you should choose your builders carefully here, as in the rest of the world. Thai builders can be great or awful; I have had both.
    I have reported your post

You're obviously not including the eyesore opposite my house in that statement.

Dr A, I think you need to balance this thread with a few examples of some truly horrible designs and decoration, with the much larger 'Beautiful Houses in Thailand' thread that has many more examples.

Thais are not alone in producing some ghastly buildings and they are also very capable of producing some extremely fine architecture, I see no problem in highlighting both types.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.

I based my remark only on my observation of many ponds that no longer hold water due to faulty construction. I even have a locally produced pond "how to" book that shows a rather large pond being built with only brick and mortar -- no steel at all. They just don't last.

In fact, on the way to lunch today Ms. AC and I observed a rather large load of dirt in the road. "What's going on?" we wondered.

Yep, the dirt was being used to fill in a cracked pond that has not had any water in it for a long time.

Yeah, I think if you choose your builders with care, are quite specific as to materials and methods to be used and inspect daily you might get a quality job; but even all that is no guarantee.

I like to think of it as just taking the piss. A lot of what you see in Thailand is a worthy target of a good piss take. It comes from our "white supremecy gene" me thinks.

OK OK stop defending yourselves, I was just winding you up a bit

but seriously, the attitude I was remarking on, the "white supremacy" one, as mentioned above, is not nice at all

unfortunately, it is all too common and makes me angry

I am sure none of you would be included in the rotten bunch of expats with that attitude!

I guess I know what you are on about Dr A, I previously enjoyed a regular sunday lunch at the Bulls head but got real tired of hearing the moaning expats with their spoiled kids droning on about,
"You can't get good help in this country" (as if they could afford it in their own) "we have to have 3 maids to do the work of one, and now Cyril is thinking about employing another driver because the current one can't get to our house in time in the mornings" (Poor bastard probably has to take 3 different buses to get there) "and as for the childrens Nanny," (eyes to heaven).

If you read the quote you lifted from my post you'll find that I was specifically referring to how Thais like to build ornamental ponds. I wasn't dissing the construction industry in general. In fact, if you take a look at my house building thread you'll find that I'm quite happy with both the strength and quality of the construction.

I think it's odd that if one offers some criticism then you're branded a racist and if you offer some praise you're branded a naive Thaiophile.

What a jerk you are DrAndy. You pull a comment I made out of context, misinterpret it and use that to call me a racist. I hope you're ashamed of yourself.

I don't think that the problem is with Thai builders per se, the problem is with builders. After all, I'm a 'builder'. I could put a postcard in a shop window and by tomorrow I could be employed on someone's property, my arse hanging out of my trousers, happily knocking down retaining walls whilst singing along to Atomic Kitten on Radio 1.

I wouldn't even need to buy a fake degree. And don't say that it couldn't be done. Because I've done it.

Did you get to shag the lady of the manor to the tones of Atomic Kitten as well?

Anyhoo, I do think a lot of stuff here is tacky. The lack of skills and general jook jick experienced in dealings of all manner of things also frustrates me. If that makes me a racist, then so be it. Personally I just think it shows I haven't been able to assimilate in the culture.

^Not sure where you hail from Frankie (well I have an idea) but if you ever visit England you will see many a lion's head set upon a plinth at the wonky gates of a monstrosity which for some reason has had crazy-paving applied to the outside (and for all I know inner) walls.....And if that makes me a racist then so be it.

A plinth in architecture is the lower mouldings of a podium, pedestal or skirting, or a block or slab upon which a column, pedestal, statue, monument, structure or vase is based.
