Orang Puteh means "white man"

Mat Salleh has no real meaning; it was called after the rebel's name who used to harass the Brit colonials. The locals used to taunt the Brits with his name, until eventually it became a term synonymous with whites

The myth it came from "Mad sailor" does not make sense, as the Malays would not use an English bastardisation, they would use their own language
