After having my business and about 8 million bahts worth of stock ripped off me by my wonderful ex employees (assisted by the filth). My answer is a resounding NO FOKING WAY.

Now my main joy in life comes from hearing the stories about how these cvnts have had all their own possesions ripped off them from the finance companies. No one will employ them and their GFs have deserted.
Som Nom Foking na you filthy cvnts.

I try not to trust anyone, I dont care where they come from.

Trust is a foolish emotion that folks from an older generation pinned a little importance on.

I never really subscribed to the trust thing, people are just too selfish.

Trust is, in a similar way as respect, is something that is build step by step and not gained immediately.
Give some and you may get some back.
If you do get, then you could try one level higher.

In deferrence to Thais, I don't think its just a Thai thing. After spending half of my civilian working life in Asia it seems to be an Asian thing.

Asians have no respect for laws, contracts or their word UNLESS its a benefit to them. Lord help you if your business deals with intellectual property and its safeguarding in Asia.

There is always the big too-doo about face. Well its phony as hell, as soon as your back is turned or they can't see your eyes, the face deals are off. I've been a party to so many 'contracts' in this region that are absolutely worthless its amazing. If an Asian wants to break a contract no problem, if its from the other perspective then all hell breaks loose.

The rule of law is a one way street in all of Asia. My experiences include, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Taiwan, Singapore and India. Some are better than others but they all suck when it comes to being able to trust them.

I think this works its way down into the general populace, where its dog-eat-dog and flock you, I want mine!

    ^ Excellent post, EG.

In your experience throughout Asia, what percentage of the corrupt folks were part, or fully-Chinese?

Yes, very well said. Concur it's not just a Thai thing but it seems Thais excell at deception more so than other Asians.

why so much negativity ? all Thais are not that bad, they are quite a few loyals and honnest people and they usually don't have money. Seriously.

Let's be honnest, the farangs will do the same here or in their home. We just like to surround ourselves with rules of laws and procedure, but at the end, it's the same, we will break contracts when they fail to deliver. A lot of my Euro suppliers did it and I do it occasionally when I find out too late that I made a bad deal with a client. We just do it more politely and in a more logical way. Maybe that's the only difference.

Never invest money in Thailand. If you are lucky enough to have a wedge stick it in the bank and live of the interest.

I have a love hate relationship with Thai people but the only national characteristic which really bugs me is the lying... petty, pointless, constant lies.

Since I did a large percentage of my business in China, Taiwan and Malaysia the percentage was large. However, I don't feel it is race based at all. Chinese people make up a large percentage of those countries..

I found it to be more of an "Asian" thing than a country or race thing.

I assume you mean Singapore and Malaysia rather than Cambodia, Lao or Myanmar.

I saw an interview on the Beeb yesterday with a very successful Hong Kongese businessman about doing business in China. The first thing he said was that China isn't governed by the rule of law to the extent that most Western countries are, therefore contacts/relaionships with other people/government officials is the most important thing to be successful.

As for me, I don't trust anyone 100% and expect most people to make a mess of things, so when somethig does go right it's a pleasant surprise.

This is what I wrote before I saw Lom's post:

I'm from the "older generation" and I do try to trust people... but any sign that they are not trustworthy and they don't get another chance.

Lom put it much better - step by step... and stop/delete when the trust is not returned.

Agreed. The only money I have in a Thai bank is for the visa.

I am, however, full of admiration for people who do invest and make a success of business in Thailand. They must have some guts, nous or luck, or a combination of the three.

Not just Thais...come to think of it those I should have least trusted are the very ones that I made lots of money for, and helped in other ways too.

^In absence of green the red, purple and white seem to work well.

I deal with a crew of 14-20 massage ladies.

A lot of trust has to be established and maintained.
Even one girl who steals a single towel isn't tolerated.
So I'm one of the 2 who voted thai people can be trusted...but you have to establish the context.
Because so much money is on the line these ladies demand and get respect and trust. Petty thievery is nonexistent. The bad ones(the selfish ones) disappear fast. We also do plenty of temple/buddha ritual which I think helps keep everyone honest.
Without Buddha they probably would have killed each other long ago.

I Trust No One. There are levels of trust you may bestow on those you know and have dealt with, but ultimately anyone you trust can fuck you. Race, religion or national origin has very little to do with it.

Asian culture is much easier, it is expected that if a business associate or competitor can garner an extra satang out of your pocket he will, in any way you let them. It is considered good business to take advantage of someone that does not watch their own back. You should know this by now and act accordingly.
