Ian Proud, Head of British Embassy's Political Division, Blog

Ian Proud, head of the British Embassy's political division, will shortly be leaving Thailand. To commemorate this occasion, Ian has written a blog for the Nation (see http://www.nationmultimedia.com/webblog/view_blog.php?uid=630&bid=2405). The following are some of the comments posted. Nothing short of hilarious…

    Ian... the original 10/04/2007 15:36

I would indeed be interested to hear Ian P. explain why we give respectable visa applicants such a rough time yet at the same time allow thousands of illegal immigrants to enter our country and stay. Not just Thailand, I have had dealings with embassy staff in Beijing and Manila, they all have the same obstructive attitude. I know you are not in the visa department Ian but after 4 years you must have a few contacts there. What I would dearly love to know is, is it official policy, or bloody mindedness from the interviewer? I received a letter of apology from the FO in London over my treatment in Beijing, but not until my MP raised a question. However, I gather nothing has changed since.

Ian Proud leaving Bangkok. This has to be the best news ever. Quite possibly the rudest 'diplomat' I have met in Thailand. Perhaps we can now open a blog about your behaviour during the Tsunami.

Disingenuous piffle. Don't give up the day job Ian.

When I applied a few years ago for my wife's first British visitors visa (not immigration visa)it was the most awful experience. My wife has a Masters degree (not a bar girl) and although we had been legally married at the Amphur for more than 5 years, they insisted I produce evidence of the time I had known her. I had to send them personal letters, photographs, testaments etc (remember we are 5 years married). I'm ashamed to say that The British Embassy treated my wife (a Thai citizen) like dirt. So Mr Ian Proud, don't give me all that bull.... about you loving the Thai's when you know exactly how The British Embassy thinks of ALL Thai women, irresespective of their background.

quite funny indeed !!! I think I also met that guy down at Long Gun once.

I recall going to the embassy once and that same night I was down on Cowboy and who did I bump into? Yes it was Ian, he was in Midnight bar and he was sucking on an Isaan girls mammaries.

    Simon Peltier 10/04/2007 17:28
I saw him walking arm in arm with a girl that could only be described as "2 dollar whore". I bet that girl got a visa no problem.

    This from the intro to the blog;

"Imagine a suave young diplomat who would kill to have a chance to taste the best namprik platu in town and who talks passionately about starting a franchise of muyong+namprik phao pancake!!).
He knows about many Thai temples more than many Thais and has travelled extensively in this country. One of the first things he did upon arrival in the Land of Smiles was to risk his life by taking part in the Songkran "War" riding on the back of a pick-up truck"

    What a hero!

What a total embarassment for the Brits. The comment about the Tsunami was considerate based on the response of the Brit. Embassy...

To any Thais reading these comments from Brits to our official representative, perhaps you can now understand why farangs find it hard to accept your Lese Majeste laws. If Britain had the same laws we would all be heading to prison now:-)

Khun Thep, take a trip down Cowboy on a Friday night, its full of Embassy staff that keep the whores going. Why else do you think they are so paranoid about issuing visas. If they mixed with 'normal' Thai women they would relax the rules, but as long as they only mix with smellies then they will continue the strict regulations as they paint al Thai women with the same brush.
    another classic...

Maybe you could share with us the reasons the Brits handed over their visa scam to a gang of Thai extortionists.I heard it was moved out of the consulate because the creeps who worked there pulled their usual derisory crap on a bunch of Aussies and they smashed the place up

    Blog response surprises diplomat
Thursday April 12, 2007 The Guardian

A British diplomat has discovered to his cost the hidden perils of the blogosphere. The head of the British embassy's political section in Bangkok thought nothing of jotting a few musings for a newspaper website as he approaches the end of his posting. But Ian Proud's innocuous blog has sparked a blizzard of comments on all manner of topics, including his forays into Bangkok's infamous red light districts.

Yesterday a rueful Mr Proud, 38, was wondering what the Foreign Office would make of it all. "It's a real eye-opener seeing the depths of people's feelings about a common diplomat," said Mr Proud. "I couldn't write about my work. So it was harmless, cute little stories about Thailand. But the response has been quite remarkable."

One mistake may have been posting a picture alongside his blog on the Nation newspaper website. A number of readers said they recognised Mr Proud from Bangkok's notorious Cowboy Street sex bars.

"I recall going to the embassy once and that same night was down on Cowboy and who did I bump into? Yes, it was Ian," wrote one. Another observed: "I saw him walking arm-in-arm with a girl that could only be described as 'two-dollar whore'. I bet that girl got a visa no problem."

Visas and the refusal of requests are clearly a bugbear for those who posted comments, even though they are not Mr Proud's responsibility. Mr Proud does not deny being out on the town during his four-year stint, but adds: "I don't think there are many people here that haven't been in places like Soi Cowboy at some point. My last visit was about a year ago."

The Nation's editor, Tulsathit Taptim, is discussing with Mr Proud whether to continue the blog. "Ian loves to get the reaction and he found it really fun over the first two days." Whether the Foreign Office will be similarly amused is another thing: Mr Proud did not anticipate the controversy so did not seek clearance.

Next month he will take a career break and marry Lek, his Thai girlfriend, "if she'll still have me after all this."
Looks like they've fired the "diplomat".

I lost my passport once and had to get a new one and was qued up with somw right scum bags. This one bloke was wearing a string vest, drinking a can of chang and necking and fondling this Thai girl in a gogo bar outfit. God knows if they were applying for a Visa but surely there must be some standards? I'm sure there are a load of idle, pompous twats working at the embassy but having to deal with burger van men and their "waitress" girlfriends day in day out would make anyone unbalanced.
They champion falsehood, support the butcher against the victim, the oppressor against the innocent child. May God mete them the punishment they deserve

LONDON (AFP) - The British foreign ministry said on Thursday that the blog of a British diplomat in Bangkok had been withdrawn after accusations that he had been spotted in the city's red light district.

Ian Proud, whose blog was posted on the website of the Thai national newspaper The Nation, denied the "malicious accusations" made on the site, the foreign ministry said.

"These were personal comments made by a member of the British Embassy in Bangkok," a Foreign Office spokesman said.

"He is a member of the diplomatic service and as such we do not comment ... I believe the blog has been withdrawn."

"Ian has been the victim of malicious accusations about his personal behaviour. He has rejected such accusations."

The foreign ministry also said it was reviewing its policy on allowing diplomats to write blogs.

Proud, 38, has admitted to visiting Cowboy Street in the Thai capital, part of the city's red light district, but has been quoted as saying that "the suggestion that I'm some sort of upholder of the sex trade in Bangkok ... It's pathetic, frankly."
Next he'll be claiming he doesnt know anybody called Lek.

It appears that the staff of the British Embassy were unaware of the high regard the general public has for them.

bullshit, I know that guy and he was definitely a regular at Long Gun. Must have spotted him at least a dozen times.

He should have thought a bit more before posting his silly blog. Bangkok is too small a world.

Diplomat's blog withdrawn after red light visits

(BangkokPost.com from Agencies) - British foreign ministry withdrew a blog of British diplomat in Bangkok after accusations that he had been spotted in the city's red light district, according to AFP.

Ian Proud, who serves as head of the British embassy's political section in Bangkok, had his blog posted on the website of the newspaper The Nation. The blog had already been withdrawn.

Proud, 38, has admitted to visiting Cowboy Street, the city's red light district, but has been quoted as saying that "the suggestion that I'm some sort of upholder of the sex trade in Bangkok ... It's pathetic, frankly."

"Ian has been the victim of malicious accusations about his personal behaviour. He has rejected such accusations," a foreign office spokesman said in London.

"These were personal comments made by a member of the British Embassy in Bangkok," he said. "He is a member of the diplomatic service and as such we do not comment ... I believe the blog has been withdrawn."

Proud's four-year tenure in Bangkok is set to end next month.

I think Ian has only just realised that the British expats actually hate dealing with their poxy unhelpful embassy, he was probably under the impression that they do a great job of being helpful.
