Actually, I believe the broader Balkan region has become quite civilised [forgetting their recent nasty history]....starting to make a comeback.

If I was a betting guy, I'd look around the once mythical Adriatic Sea coastal regions.....still a bargain!

Cornwall has a few Polish but that's about it.

The rest are english folks, inbred, racist oddballs.

When I first moved to Thailand it was 66 Baht to £1 and it went up as far as 77 Baht, it was great and the locals were still peasant-like. Technology has spoilt that.

Everywhere is becoming more expensive .

In the UK they have increased the price of Turkish delight whilst shrinking them to postage stamp size .

    We are all doomed capn

Not if one knows how to prepare it.
Same techniques as cooking pig skin and the thin layer of fatty tissue.
Simmered for hours [all day], it's quite pleasant - the pork skin, that is.

I suggest the Midget ask him to stop being such a spear chucker, but I doubt the message was passed on.

Actually the opinions of tourists that come to Phuket or similar places for 2-3 weeks a year are worth fuk all. They know nothing about Thailand except the usual tourist shit. Phuket ain't Thailand but simply a muppet factory for mass tourism same as Patters.

Get upcountry and you will find that the cost of living is still very reasonable especially if you have a few brains to stay away from the tourist areas.

But to answer your question for me its Bali and Malaysia but the best of the lot is to rotate through all 3 countries. Keeps life fresh and interesting.

I may be wrong, but i thought you only spent a few weeks in Thailand each year?
As much as i didnt really enjoy Phuket, I dont think somewhere hidden away in a jungle would be the type of place i would enjoy. I like beaches, western stuff when I want it, and the chance to talk in English every now and then, granted Phuket was bloody full of Aussies, who claim they speak English, but hell if I could understand what they were on about.

How is Malaysia price wise, Bali I am guessing another place packed with Aussies.

Beaches, decent beer, attractive women, whether P4P or not, a semi decent medical scene(diabetic so something I worry about) are really what i look for. Cambodia was interesting to visit for a few weeks, and may be a great place in a few years, when the infrastructure is in place.

I think the problem too many people make, is burning all of their bridges when they leave the home country. As much as living in Canada may piss me off at times, i cant see myself ever leaving for good. It may not be the greatest country there is, but its somewhere i can see myself spending springs and summers in, even the winters arent bad, compared to most of Canada.

Britain is full of couples who sold up everything, and said,"We are never coming back" the went and lived in Spain, only to return years later, with nothing, moving in with relatives and claiming welfare.
When they leave, they do not listen to "Do not burn your bridges" they are adament that they are not coming back.

Nonsense. You can live just as normal, devoid of mass tourism, kind of life on Phuket as you can anywhere else. The only difference being you have all the things most people want and need in life on your doorstep when you want them.

Most people don't want to be so far from civilisation that they don't have any decent schools to send their kids to, or decent international standard restaurants, health clubs, sports centres, marinas, etc etc.

The only major difference I see is that your house will cost you a bit more than it will in Issarn, but that's about it.

As far as the OP is concerned, if Thailand gets too pricey for you I think you may be in a spot of bother. It probably means you need to be heading West again.

This was brought on by something i read saying the pound is now about 45baht, down from 60baht a few years ago. I was also talking to a few Aussies on my trip to Thailand 2 years ago, who were bitching about how much prices had increased from 2009, these guys have been coming to Thailand since about 2000, but where now thinking of new places to holiday. For what its worth, they usually did 3, 2-3 week trips to Phuket every year. Maybe it is just Phuket that has seen these giant price increases, I dont know.

Phuket beaches are expensive. Those guys must be clueless if they think the whole country is like that.

I've stayed in hotels in 2012 that were no more expensive than 2005 prices.

Lots of bargains if you look around.

Also the $aud has been buying 30-32 baht now compared to 28 baht in the past

You could always move to the US in 5 years or so when it becomes a 3rd world country. I suppose it will be pretty cheap compared to SE Asia. Just save your money as there wont be any work for expats there just the poor locals lol.

Sri Lanka and Nicaragua interest me, but I suspect if I had to move from Thailand I'd just move somewhere nearby, like Khmer or Laos, maybe Langkawi.
^^ No joke. Economic trends being what they are, Thailand may well end up as, or more expensive than several western countries. I'd still prefer it here though.
