Worth discussing - the typical Thai male

I read the following posts in one of TD;s threads and thought it would be worth discussing.

Gives us your take on Thai men. Feel free to share all of the wonderful experiences you have had is dealing with them. Tell us how great they are and what responsible, dependable citizens they are. Do not hold back! Gives us your glowing reports!

This parental madness is not only confined to the bovine brained peasant classes, it exists throughout all levels of this socially dysfunctional society.

The 'typical Thai male' that I generally see described on here often leaves me rather bemused as they're nothing like the Thai males that I associate with on any sort of regular basis: so does that make them atypical or is it simply a factor of experience?

I do not associate with any of them, nor does Mrs. Chi. In fact, she refused to ask for help from a shop keeper that is a Thai man and will search out help from a Thai woman. This is to avoid delays, unintelligible responses, stupidly and other headaches that come from dealing with the Thai male species.

The Thai financiers in Investment banking, and PhD scientists I've known over the years. Yes, impressive men.

Of course, if one only associates with television repair men and truck delivery men - (of whatever nationality), what can one expect?!

    What about her dad?

I've nothing but respect for my FIL. Good man who has taken care of his family his whole life, currently enjoying his retirement, doesn't drink/smoke/gamble, loves his daughters (certainly thinks I'm not good enough to have married his eldest but doesn't give me too much grief over it all the same), and dotes over his grand-kids. He's typical to me.

Chitown - how good is your Thai when talking to these Thai guys?

Is it reasonably fluent, with the conversation conducted at a moderate volume?

To be fair, it's possible that Chicago has a better type of TV repair man. Perhaps in Chicago, whilst adjusting the aerial, they stand there reciting their favourite passages from Finnegans Wake (O chitown tell me all about Anna Livia!) or engage in impromptu riffs on Wittgenstein's private language argument. Maybe that's what chitown misses.

If you venture into the crappy areas where the low class scum hangs out, you'll find Thai males like this.

The other Thai males worth criticizing are the ones who still read comic books on the Skytrain.

I like the "typical" Thai male. I find them funny. I don't like the way most treat their women, but it's their way. Only time I avoid the "typical" Thai male is when they drink. Then I dislike them.

Not all low class Thai males are hazardous when drunk.

I've sat and drunk with the same group of motorcycle taxi guys a few times. One was totally fluent in english, which was a nice change given his job and social standing (in the Thai sense)

Met one yesterday, up from Bangkok to flash his money and 'take care family'. He has a succesful restaurant employing 30 people (Nonthaburi), lots of gold which he displays conspicously (yeck), and several nice cars (of the fortuna/ accord variety). He started out as a kitchen hand. He is gay as a nine bob note. He has 30 CCTV cameras in his restaurant, with live feed to his Apple toys. Nice to watch a bustling Bangkok restaurant from the safety of Isaan. Saw one of the guys pocketing the lions share of a tip, too- happens all the time he said.

So that's yesterdays story- how 'bout yerself?

just got a taxi from the airport and just observing them going about their daily routine, you can understand where the term Kwai comes from. had one guy cut in front of us in his car. his eyes only focused on the right turn. Another one was on a motosai overtaking a car whilst just avoiding a head on collision with us, he was in no rush to pull back in and that dumb blank expression on his face......

Typical Thai male is probably seen as the lowclass caste with the peasant mentality. As this is the largest social group in the country.

They are probably no different than the redneck, trailer trash, council estate class in the West.

    The only difference is that:

    a) The respective numbers of each in the societies, so one is more aware of them here.
    b) That Westerners in Thailand usually find themselves married into and living in the lowest class in the country. The same as marrying into a trailer park family or council estate back home. Then whining about them being scummy.

^ What do you call the lowest class in the country? I live in a small farming village in Isaan and treat every one in the village with respect and in turn I am treated with the same respect, some of the posters here by their posts seem arrogant and would bring out feelings of disrespect in anyone myself included.

exactly. if you choose to surround your self with poorly educated, unsophisticated ne'er do wells, how can you be surprised when they behave like poorly educated, unsophisticated, ne'er do wells?

They would probably be from council estates or gypsy halting sites (God forbid).

And likely have all the social problems that exist in the lower classes (the majority) of Thai society.
