I think Maldives you can own land and no visa runs, and yes it is cheap, well apart from that tasty Hilton restaurant that is.

before arriving i instructed the agent to arrange good quality accomodation for the inspector from Shell (who we were trying to impress - the ship passing the inspection would result in $$$ of business from Shell). He had come all the way from Durban and stayed 3 days before I arrived (i only stayed one night). Imagine my horror when I saw that he had been put up here (they normally get 4 or 5 star hotels) and without even a chance to get a beer to drown his sorrows.

i took these pics to show my jealous colleagues of my trip to the legendary maldives.....

Luckily i had met the inspector before in my sailing days as he was also the mooring master/pilot at Durban so he was in fairly good spirits - until we took him back to the airport where there is a pretty good hotel with a bar. I asked the agent why we hadnt been put up there thinking that he would say it was full. Oh no, the agent thought it had been too expensive at 80 bucks a night. Then i could see the inspector starting to lose his cool.......

but for me the highlight of the trip for me was the 8 hour transfer at Columbo airport on both the outward and inward journeys

my hosts could see i was not very happy about how things had been arranged so they offered to bring me out fishing in their boat.

and within 10 minutes of fishing i managed to catch one! the first and probably last fish i will ever catch. never got to eat it though as i was off to the airport an hour later...

and that for me was the maldives.

by the way all the shops are closed on a friday
