Can't speak for Pattaya JPR but Phuket is a huge place with some good quality spaces as well as the awful bar areas. Same goes for Samui.Originally Posted by JPPR2

I agree Chass. If I was to go to Phuket, It would be completely on the outskirts and to a remote locale. Pattaya however is not worth visiting at all from what I have read and people have told me.
But honestly there are way better retreats and getaways in and around Thailand and Malaysia then those 2 heavily trafficked tourist locations.
If you have kids then Pattaya is a good place to holiday compared to other locations in Thailand.Originally Posted by JPPR2
How so? Just curious. With mobs of people walking the streets. the rampant bar and night life with soliciting prostitution, fighting, drunk people during the day and night, the beach scamming.etc etc. I know I would never want to take my children there. Might as well stay home and go to an amusement park.
However I guess maybe the fact you can give your kids McDonalds, KFC, Pizza hut, Carl's junior etc makes it a user friendly place to bring kids. Just toss them a happy meal, give them a tablet to play video games and let them sit by a pool.
Btw jims kids are in there 30's
Yep Pattaya is a good place for kids.
So you've read about it, fukk off twat!Originally Posted by JPPR2

Jesus, you must live in the Boon docks (sorry Booners). Chaing Mai is a very civilized place to live and there are a number of tourist information centers. (Is that where the cops hang out?) Never been in one but I'm sure they're helpful as there are many tourists here.Originally Posted by JPPR2

They have 'Tourist Police' in Korat. That's 360km NE of Pattaya. Says a lot about the area. Just sayin...
Everyone to their own.
Never been to Pattaya and from what i've heard i won't be taking the family there.
We spend time in Hau Hin, Bangkok, Chaing Mai or Petchabun when we get the opportunity to visit Thailand.
Can you imagine what goes through the childs mind when they see loads of Thai women with farangs and no farang women with Thai men....just sayin...
You can have a great weekend with kids in Pattayai If you stay in a nice family hotel away from it all
Try the Amari or Hard Rock,
Pattaya is a lot more fun for kids than Hua Hin imho and half the distance too
no i cant, the age gaps yesOriginally Posted by Chittychangchang
If you're referring to Thai children, yes I can imagine. They are very well brought up in the sense of acting older than their age. With that kind of discipline, I'm sure they would think nothing of it. This was brought home to me when, as an English teacher, I attended some Buddhist ceremony at my school (ages 12-18). No idea which ceremony it was but it was unique in my 3 years as a teacher. At some point all the students were invited up to get hugs from the monks (and teachers, too, I think) and the students, almost 100% of them, were extremely emotional (think tears) in a genuine way. I mean I've seen my share of staged emotional reactions but this ceremony was not one of those. Quite remarkable.Originally Posted by Chittychangchang
Honestly, probably nothing goes through their minds. That sort of "value judgement" comes at a much later age. Even then, it would only be a result of having it pointed out to them in a negative context. Kids are amazingly accepting, without any of our baggage.
As for Pattaya, I visit a lot. Years ago it was diving and a bit of partying. Now more likely to be work and meetings. It has a fair bit to offer, some decent (in some cases very decent) restaurants, some great hotels, some with private beaches. Stay out of walking street, and beach road at night and you could have a very pleasant break. With or without kids.
We have plans to visit Rayong and visit Thai family who work off shore.
apparently it's all Thai and very few farangs, we'll see.
Have to report my address every 90 days at the immigration office. I'm still kinda new at this so asked for instructions. Thai lady behind the desk said to go office 3, which is next to the passport photo and copier shop. Office 3 is actually the police alien record keeping office so before I had a chance to remember the process (get a photo and copy pages of my passport), I find myself sitting across the desk from a cop, filling out some kind of alien registration form which had nothing to do with the 90 day address report (sneaky pigs). Once they put that on file and wouldn't give me a copy (actually had the gall to tell me the form I had just filled out didn't exist), I was directed back to the original Thai lady who gave me the simple one-page address report form. As implied, all I actually had to do was fill it out and turn it in, along with photo copies of my passport and visa. It took all of 15 minutes.
I've been to immigration twice on the last 7 years . . . I guess that's the difference between a monkey-country and a semi-real country.
I remember the days of 90-day reporting despite owning a business and employing several dozen people.
I remember the visa-company we hired to do the initial work . . . towards the end of the process she said immigration had kept our passports and wanted 10.000 baht . . .
Told her I'd report her to our embassy and immigration officials the Embassy works with. We had them back in a week.
Scum. Simply scum
Go to US Embassy web site to schedule appointments for my kids to get new passports. On the first hour of the first working day in August. NO appointments available for the entire month - fully booked. First available September 22nd.
Call them. Phone lines open 1-3 PM Mon and Wed only.
Schedule appointments for September. Only appointment times offered are 0745 or 0845. Not real convenient for folks who live 2 hours away.
But, as long as it's all convenient for them....KUNTS!
