Don't fuck with him, he's mafia

The Anodard thread led me to thinking about the dreadful frustrations of living in this country.

Minor victories are very difficult to achieve.
When you feel ripped off or hard done by, you often come face to face with warnings about the people who diddled you.

I hear it all the time.
I was in a pub the other day and someone had got into an altercation with a Thai lad the night before.
He was being warned not to fuck with the Thai guy because the guy was 'mafia'. I know the Thai guy and he does have a few tattoos but as far as I can tell not a pot to piss in.

What exactly does the concept of mafia mean in Thailand.
Is it people with means, people with contacts or the whole kaboodle?

To scare the farangs I think. They have no concept of mafia. Three motocyces and a taxi driver constitute a mafia here. It means if you fuckin twat one of them they'll come back later with 10 of their mates. Thai mafia = Thai shitbags IMO.

Actually, this happened 6 months or so ago, but the dramatic effect would have been lost.

My interpretation would be someone who could, and would, have you hurt or killed for crossing them; or maybe for just being in the way - And for them to expect to get away with it. You can call it the 'MickeyMouse Club' if you like, the consequence to you is the same.

Is there such a thing as a proper mafia in Thailand?

I always assumed that the Police had a dual role in that regard.

It overlaps to some extent, but it's no good mixing the two up. Stick to one on a given occasion, if you can't avoid it.

I find the (over)use of the word "Mafia" here somewhat amusing. Any three guys gt together and decide they have some common interests and reason to form a loose-knit mutual protection society type thing, they become "Mafia."

There most certainly are organizations in this country, as with any other, that could seriously be referred to as "mafia." Well except they ain;t got no fuckin' Eye-talians amongst 'em. But their influence goes well beyond the cop on the street or a few hitmen in residence. Do they cooperate amongst themselves? Most likely. Otherwise, there would be Bombs going off and people getting killed, wait a minute scratch "most likely" insert "maybe, sometimes."

Back in the States there was always someone willing to tell you that this dude is "East Bay Saints" or that dude was "Norteno" and you better not fuck with 'em. Most (not all) little, tattooed bad-boys causing trouble and acting tough are of this ilk.

These little lightweight gangster confederations do look for ways to prove themselves and earn reputation. Avoiding conflict with people like this is always a prudent idea, backing down when cornered is not necessarily as prudent. If you can establish that you have the will to persecute any conflict as far as needed to ensure you are not victimized usually folks will be more reasonable with you.

Then again there are those nut-case, dont-give-a-fuck groups Mafias? Hardly. Still, unless they threaten you or yours best to leave 'em the fuck alone.

^^seems the same as girls carrying pepper spay or tasers to 'protect themselves'...

if they don't do it properly the first time, and continue to hold the finger on the button they will find themselves in serious danger...

a little touch will be just enough to really piss some guy off and then they have a big problem...

so as TY says...if you go then go for the jugular...

The main organised crime here is 'Nak Lehng' or something like that, and that is usually what they mean when they say Thai Mafia. They are basically organised on a District or Provincial level, headed by one or more of the local Big Men, although informally. It's a lot more loose than the Mafia.
More often than not when a Thai says it they're bluffing, and some even get heavily tattoo'd to look the part. It's a bluff I'd be reluctant to call.

Anybody that goes around saying "dont fuck with me, i'm mafia", most prolly isn't.... more likely just wishing that he wasn't just another regular scumbag..

My Thai friend claims that "maffia" in the weed business up CM are just business men competing against the police in a turf war to knock their stuff out. They would never claim to be maffia.
People who claim they are probably aren't. Best not to mix with dodgy people.

Mafia has ecome a generic term repesenting any Organized Crime Group. It could also be defined as a group that could be tried under the RICO statute in the USA (though that statute has been used against others). I don't think anyone should rule out a 'Thai Mafia' possibility, especially in a country that has been known to grow opium poppy within it's borders. Drugs can mean big money and organization is essential in that line of business, even if the "Thai Mafia" is grown from outside Thailand's borders.

    Bangkok as Crime Central
Where international gangs are settling scores
    By ANTONY DAVIS Bangkok

Seven hitmen barge into an apartment used by a top Indian mafia boss. His
sidekick dies in a storm of gunfire while the don and his aide's wife are
critically wounded. The raiding party calmly walks out.

Wanted for robbery, extortion and drug dealing, a notorious Pakistani gang
leader, gun in hand, dies in a clash with undercover police. They say he was
resisting arrest after trying to sell them drugs in a sting operation.

Chinese triad members are ambushed by rival mobsters on a main city
expressway. As their astounded taxi driver flees, the three men are riddled
    with bullets and left dead.

Crime-desk snapshots from the mean streets of Bombay, Karachi and
Macau? Wrong. Bid welcome instead to laid-back Bangkok, widely regarded
as one of Asia's least violent metropolises. This is a city where, traditionally
Thai crime operates Thai-style. The cops know the mobs, the mobs know the
rules and everybody tries to get along nicely. Mafia bloodletting is rare,
generally confined to squabbling godfathers in the provinces.

Very long article so more at

No idea about it's accuracy but it's pretty entertaining.
