functioning walkmans in Thailand - do they exist?

I've just had my 3rd Thai purchased walkman (a.k.a Personal CD player) break on me - I can't find any 'real' brands except one or two in the 5000B range.

what is it with all this fake shit - It's not even cheap

I know the locals need a few scams to rip the tourists off and it seems to be the same brand of copies in all the places I've been to this time around - guess there must be some kind of fake walkman mafia.

Irritating thing is , I checked them all out when purchasing but after listening to a few cd's they just died (well two of them anyway).

Maybe they can't handle duracell batteries?

I have been stiffed.

'Personal CD player' I guess is the correct term - a little bit passe now with the advent of ipods/mp3 but I still use them.

mind you the 100B CD/s that you can buy here don't really work properly either.

I'll have to get an iPod at last.

some people must do but I've noticed back home that 'Dixons' has stopped selling personal CD players.

iPods are good but not if you don't have internet access - plus can you really get all the obscure stuff on-line anyway? (I think not)

Actually in my experience you can. SOmething like Limewire is brilliant for that. I've yet to have a problem finding anything - no matter how 'weird'

What about portable gramophone players - are there any decent ones to be found in Thailand? One that can play both my 33's and my 45's and perhaps even my good old 78's? I mean the new electric type with an internal motor - I am fed up with the manual type.......

And what is this CD thingy I hear so much about - is that like a small 45?

never seen a turntable here - they must be avaliable though- what do all the self-aspiring DJ's use?

if you don't live in Bangkok you must be fucked for getting musical equipment - I mean instruments as well as hi-fi stuff...

saw a drum kit for sale the other day - absolute shittest quality money could buy and they wanted something like 11k Baht for it

Dont know where you buy your stuff, and dont know how much the market has changed since around 1999-2000 which was the last time I shopped around for those things... but back then anyway, MBK was the place to go.

You should ask for grade A straight from the start. Tell them nicely you are not interested in copies and not to waste your time.

After trials, tribulations, and negotiations, I got myself 2 portable Sony MD players, 1 was 2000 baht cheaper and the other one was 3000 baht cheaper than the ones in the real Sony shop one floor down. Not fakes, more likely 'dropped off a truck' - the boxes stated 'only for sale in the Russian market'.

I also bought myself a Panasonic portable CD player for around 2500 baht, which still works.

But that was in 2000. Who knows what the score is these days.

An mp3 player sounds like a better idea though.

Yeah, quite tempting. But the problem for me is getting my several cubic feet of vinyl over to Thailand in one piece AND not paying tax on it...

And, of course, getting one of those gadgets over here in one piece too.
