India vows 'action' over Big Brother

Alleged racist bullying of a top Bollywood star on British television boiled over into a diplomatic spat today, as India vowed to take "appropriate action".
Angry government ministers in both countries, furious fans burning effigies, distressed relatives, seething viewers and even Sylvester Stallone waded in to the row over the treatment of glamorous Indian actress Shilpa Shetty on the reality show Celebrity Big Brother.
The Bollywood queen, 31, is one of nine stars locked in a London house whose activities are broadcast round the clock by Channel 4.
The broadcaster denied there had been any overt racism abuse directed against Shetty, though it admitted that there had been a "cultural and class clash" between the glamorous star and some of her British housemates and pledged to clamp down on "unambiguous" racism.
Unaware of the storm raging beyond the garden fence, Shetty remains locked in the house, where she has been regularly reduced to tears by a clique which has formed against her.
The film star has been branded a "dog" amid regular sniping, and told to clean out the toilet with her teeth by one housemate who some viewers think called her a "Paki" -- which Channel Four denies.
She has been asked whether she has "stubble" and whether she lived in a house or a shack, while one housemate has made derogatory remarks about Indian hygiene and said "she wants to be white".
British Prime Minister Tony Blair was grilled in parliament and told lawmakers he had not seen the show but backed "opposing racism in all its forms".
London Mayor Ken Livingstone blasted the "racism" towards Shetty, saying it undermined the capital's economy and was "the exact opposite to the approach that London takes towards the different cultures that exist in our city."
Media regulator Ofcom tried to cope with 19,300 complaints, the largest amount it has ever fielded, while a further 2,000 were directed to Channel Four by upset viewers. The police have also received a racism complaint.
The row spread to India, where British finance minister Gordon Brown interrupted his Bangalore visit to speak out against the "offensive" comments as demonstrators torched effigies of "Big Brother organisers" in the streets.
Diplomats said Shetty's treatment was causing genuine damage to Britain's standing and reputation in India, London's Evening Standard newspaper reported.
Indian junior foreign minister Anand Sharma said the government was "seized of the matter" and was looking into all the aspects of the situation.
"We will take appropriate action as required," Sharma vowed. "The world knows that India has throughout firmly rejected all forms of discrimination and racism."
Back in Britain, Brown's Treasury Minister Ed Balls told BBC television he felt "ashamed".
"The kind of image it projects of Britain around the world is appalling," he said.

What a joke. Ask an Indian hindu what the chances of marrying outside his caste are.

Big Brother: Television, by the idiots, for the idiots.

Oh, come on. The show's ratings have skyrocketed, a little known (even in India) actress is now famous.

    Put up job, methinks.

Leo Sayer stormed out by kicking a hole in the wall and telling the producers to fuck off, he wants to come back home to Oz as soon as possible.

If it ends up getting the show cancelled, it wouldn't have been in vain.

i dont think its a complete put up - more of mixing together a few carefully selected elements and then see what happens, similare to Jerry Springer getting black rights guys and klu klux klhan together!

    bound to happen!

No, apparently a Brit all his life. He supposedly bought a house in Sydney in 2005. Website didn't say if he was an Aussie citizen.

If you get bunch of chavs in what do expect? I saw this silly young girl (the producer) on BBC News 24 describe the people in the buliding as characters.... The people in that house are real. The BBC should stop wasting money reality TV copies and get back to the Reithian ideal: "inform, educate and entertain". If I paid a focking TV license I would want my money back !!!
