    Is the internet becoming irrelevant..?

The internet is a wonderful thing huh..? But I find myself becoming less and less interested in the mountain of info that it has to offer.

Perhaps it's just me... rather than spending hours surfing, I tend now to just get the info I need, drop in here for a gas and then turn it off and do something else.

Perhaps it's just age but I feel a disenchantment with the net, the crass shallowness of articles for articles sake, pushing fads that are instantly forgettable. The 'look at me' and 'fail' culture and the overwhelming sense of the planet being beyond fucked through countless stories of disaster and deprivation lends nothing to my daily sense of well being.

The net has it's uses, tickets, maps, emails.. services in general, things that make the internet a necessity. Of course the net is here to stay, but I wonder if it will become less popular or less important in peoples lives... well I know of course that if it falls out of favor with one demographic, there will always be another to take up the bandwidth.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!"

The internet gave a voice to the masses.
    That's what you are hearing.
The masses, of course are mostly feckless idiots.....

So true in many ways and Google is their friend.
I read an article recently about a new search engine the dismisses the first million hits and helps you discover less popular opinions, but I couldn't find it

Same as ever for me as I never spent hours looking around , generally surf a little when I'm having a break from using / learning or stealing progs .

You have to be careful or you end up like those people you see at work or in the pub reading the newspaper , usually The sun , takes them about 10 min to read in full, then they keep going from back to front , front to back- reading every page over and over, looking up and down in case they missed something ,
    then repeat next break ...

What was our existence like before the interwebs and obsessively controlling gadgetry?

I have nothing to add - just found it refreshing to find a thread that KW had not infected.

I voted more. But that's just a temporary measure until my job start date comes through. At the moment, I'm bored stiff, so tend to pick up the laptop and go online. Also just listed a load of Mum's stuff on eBay, so that took a while.

When I'm working it will settle down to within normal parameters again

When I'm on rotation I surf the net a lot, download a movie to watch most nights and play iphone games too.

5 weeks off I very rarely open up the laptop but will check emails daily on my phone.

    I voted porn.

i suppose getting a rapid response when using the internet was what impressed me.
until i started posting on TD about the illusion of man-made organised religions.
got very little response except from the resident guru ENT who ended up calling me a hippy. But i was never a hippy.
That unless you put it all in the bin
people will continue to act as a catholic, protestant, muslim, buddhist, guru hugger, etc. etc.
that only by binning the whole charade,,
    can you know Freedom.
But was happy to make my point on the internet.

Far from becoming irrelevant, there's a danger of it completely taking over great sections of society and the workplace, including education.

Maybe real life is becoming irrelevant.

The internet can support work, banking, socialising, movies, tv shows.

Why bother going outside? It is too risky.

I voted more time... I spend more time on the internet than watching tv.

I don't know where I'd be without the internet. I use it so much as a resource mostly to look things up, plan trips, find information etc..

I bank online and chat with friends from around the world..
I don't think the internet will take over the world per se. I think because of the internet you have decreased numbers of people using newspaper and snail mail.

I too am tapering down. The I is a saviour when you're living alone with nothing to do. It's funny, whenever I slack off for a week or two it always seems so silly to have been hooked. I can't imagine a man with a wife and family fixated on defending his ego with forum folk. Hi AO.

You know me so well. Sadly for you many others know me better. Very busy with twins in A levels, studying for their SAT exams as well. I enjoy cooking for them, and just being around them. How often do you see your children? Or do you see them?

I reckon life is something like this for you.

Being that you live in alone in Mexico, and once you have gotten a new internet connection will be back on forums full time.

If you really believe you are better off without them, good for you.

The internet allows me to keep in touch with Family on a daily basis via Skype.
My old mum isn't so lonely with it and it allows me to do my banking, pay bills, buy and sell stuff.
It's becoming more relevant if anything.

How sweet! You enjoy cooking for them. Let´s not let them ever know what a despirate loser you are, spending as much time serial redding on a forum and smoking pot than washing their dishes. Do they know you´re developemently arrested?

I've been spending less time, just getting the info I need etc and of course TD.

When the masses really realise how crap FB & Twitter is and only use FB out of necessity (relatives etc) and then also realise that twitter is a noticeboard for egomaniacs and those who have a overblown sense of importance, it'll die down and the press who have embraced it a little too much, will hopefully stop bombarding us with tweets from twats who have nothing else to do. I mean why do we have to have tweets from crap celebrities who aren't even famous for anything?

I'm old fashioned, I meet people for dinner, have conversations, don't take photos of my dinner or car park signs, and have unfriended those friends who do their status too much
