Follow [at]sbnphilly on Twitter, and Like SB Nation Philly on Facebook. Nov 7, 2011 - Philadelphia boxing legend and former undisputed heavyweight champion "Smokin' " Joe Frazier has passed away at 67. Frazier was diagnosed with liver cancer in late September. His condition never appeared to improve and he was moved to hospice care earlier this month. Frazier is best known for his fights with Muhammad Ali and George Foreman which defined a generation. Though he was born in South Carolina, it was Philadelphia that Joe called home. Scenes from the movie Rocky were taken from real life experiences which Frazier was never credited for. His rivalry with Ali was built upon "the Fight of the Century" and "the Thrilla in Manilla". These fights didn't just change the face of boxing but also had a deeper impact socially not just in the United States but the whole world. Frazier is survived by his sons. Stay tuned to SB Nation Philly for more on the life and career of Joe Frazier in the upcoming days. |

I never knew the Rocky I film was based on Joe Frazier. And they didn't give Joe credit! You can see Frazier's fights with Ali via torrent as I watched the "Thrilla in Manila" again this Summer. | |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | He used to go to a chiropractor/physical therapy place a few blocks from my house on Broad Street, I saw him a few times, always dressed classy. I know a few people that met him, and all had a great experiences. A friend of mine met him two or three months ago at a 7-11 a near the chiropractor/physical therapy place, it shows you how deadly liver cancer is. A guy I worked with died from liver cancer in September after only knowing about it a few months, though I suspect he knew longer but never got it checked out. He lived a clean life too, he was into body building for years, and wasn't into drink or drugs, when they found his tumor it was the size of a grapefruit I was told. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tyson: Frazier a god of boxing "The Family of Joe Frazier continues to stress that they want everyone to know that Joe Frazier was a man of God and a man who loved all of his family," relatives said in a statement. The former heavyweight champion became a legend in his own right and personified the gritty working-class style of his hard-knuckled hometown, Philadelphia -- a fitting setting for the "Rocky" film series, starring Sylvester Stallone as hardscrabble boxer Rocky Balboa. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter called Frazier the "quintessential Philadelphia boxer." "You could hear him coming, snorting and grunting and puffing, like a steam engine climbing a steep grade," Bill Lyon wrote in a Philadelphia Inquirer column about Frazier, nicknamed "Smokin' Joe."
